Overview
The theory test is the first step towards a UK driving licence for cars and for motorcycles and mopeds. It is run by the DVSA and has two parts taken in one sitting: multiple-choice questions and a hazard perception video test. You must pass both parts, and you need a pass certificate before you can book the practical driving test.
Lorry and bus theory tests are separate; see the LGV/PCV Theory programme.

Who can apply
You need a provisional driving licence for the vehicle you want to ride or drive.
For a car, you can usually take the test from age 17. You can take it at 16 if you receive the higher rate of the mobility part of Personal Independence Payment.
For a motorcycle, the minimum age is 16 for a moped (up to 50cc) and 17 for a motorcycle. You can take it before or after compulsory basic training.
You do not need to take the car theory test if you are only upgrading an automatic licence to manual, or if you hold a category B1 licence issued before 1 February 2001.
Exam pattern
| Part | What it is |
|---|---|
| Multiple-choice questions | Questions on driving rules and knowledge, based on The Highway Code, Know your traffic signs and Driving - the essential skills |
| Hazard perception | Video clips in which you identify developing hazards |
The test is offered in English, Welsh or British Sign Language.
Marking and results
| Part | Pass mark | Points available |
|---|---|---|
| Multiple-choice questions | 43 | 50 |
| Hazard perception | 44 | 75 |
The pass marks are the same for the car and the motorcycle test. You get your result at the test centre straight after the test. If you pass, you get a letter with your pass certificate number. If you fail either part, you must retake the whole test, after waiting at least 3 working days.
Fees
The car theory test costs £23 to book. The motorcycle page points to the DVSA driving test costs page for its fee.
How to apply
Make sure you hold the right provisional licence.
Book the test on GOV.UK.
Take your UK photocard licence to the test centre. If you hold a paper licence you must bring a valid passport instead. Northern Ireland photocard holders also bring the paper counterpart.
Your test is cancelled and the fee is not refunded if you do not bring the right documents. You can change a booking with at least 3 working days notice.
After the exam
Your theory pass certificate lasts 2 years. You must pass your driving test within that time, or you have to pass the theory test again.
Preparation tips
Study the three source books named above; official DVSA study books, mobile apps and online practice kits are available.
DVSA offers a free practice test. Practice questions are not used in the real test but follow the same topics.
Practise the hazard perception clips as well as the questions, because a pass needs both.
FAQs
If I pass the questions but fail hazard perception, do I keep the pass?
No. You must retake the full test, both parts, after at least 3 working days.
How long is the pass certificate valid?
For 2 years. If you have not passed your driving test by then, you must take the theory test again.
