Marking and results

You must score 75% or more to pass. On passing, you receive a unique reference number, which you need for your citizenship or settlement application. If you do not pass, you can retake the test as many times as you need, paying the fee each time.

Fees

The test fee is 50 pounds (GBP 50), as stated by GOV.UK in 2026.

How to apply

  1. Book online at least 3 days before the test date.

  2. Have an email address, a debit or credit card, and an accepted form of ID ready when booking.

  3. Take the same original ID to the test centre. Copies and screenshots are not accepted, and your photo is taken on the day.

Accepted ID listed by GOV.UK includes an eVisa (using a share code from your UKVI account), a valid passport, a valid ID card from the EU, Switzerland, Iceland, Liechtenstein or Norway, a valid photo travel document (not an emergency one), and a biometric residence permit or card that meets GOV.UK's expiry conditions.

Important

If you cannot show the ID used for booking, or refuse to have your photo taken, you cannot sit the test and you lose your fee. You also cannot bring children or other family members to the test centre.

Preparation tips

  • Study the official Life in the UK handbook, as the questions are based on it.

  • Check the GOV.UK page for the current ID rules before you book, as the accepted ID list changes.
