Overview

The Victorian Learner Permit Test is run by VicRoads. Passing it lets you collect a learner permit and begin supervised driving. VicRoads recommends taking it online, because the online version comes with a free learner permit course. The test covers road safety and road rules in Victoria, including parking, giving way, signs and markings, managing speed and tiredness, and avoiding drink and drug driving.

Exam pattern

There are two ways to take it.

OptionDetail
Online course and testTakes about 4 to 6 hours with no time pressure; works on a phone, though a laptop or desktop is suggested. Enrol from your myVicRoads account, complete the course within 12 months of enrolling, then take the test.
In person at a VicRoads Customer Service CentreAvailable only if you want to sit the test in another language or have no computer or internet access. The test and permit application happen in one appointment of about 45 minutes, and an appointment fee applies.

The official practice test has 32 questions like the actual test and a 78 per cent pass mark. Questions are based on all four chapters of the Road to Solo Driving handbook.

Who can apply

Check the eligibility rules for a learner permit on the VicRoads page before enrolling. The test page does not list them itself.

How to apply

  1. Check you are eligible.

  2. Enrol from your myVicRoads account (online) or book an appointment at a Customer Service Centre (in person).

  3. Pass the test. After an online pass, visit a Customer Service Centre to get your permit; no appointment is needed, but bring the required documents. After an in-person pass you are issued the permit at the same visit.

Fees

Your first online attempt is free. If you fail online you can try again but must pay a fee, and in-person appointments carry a fee. Amounts are on the VicRoads Ls and Ps fees page, which was not read for this review. If you fail in person, you can take the online test once more for free.

Languages

The in-person test is offered in Albanian, Arabic, Cambodian, Chinese (Mandarin), Macedonian, Persian, Russian, Serbian, Sinhalese, Somali, Spanish, Turkish and Vietnamese. For other languages you can book an interpreter at a Customer Service Centre. The handbook is also available in Arabic, Simplified Chinese, Turkish and Vietnamese.

Preparation tips

  • Read the latest Road to Solo Driving handbook in full, because questions come from all four chapters.

  • Use the official practice test, which generates different random questions each time and links wrong answers back to the relevant handbook chapter.

How many questions are on the practice test, and what is the pass mark?

The VicRoads practice test has 32 questions like the actual test, with a 78 per cent pass mark.
