Overview
PrepL is the Queensland Government's online course for people who want a learner car licence (class C). It teaches road rules and safe driving through interactive activities, videos and scenarios, and ends with a multiple-choice test. Passing PrepL is one of two ways to meet the knowledge requirement for a Queensland learner licence. The other is the written road rules test taken at a licence service centre. The Queensland Government says the written test will eventually be replaced by PrepL.

Who can apply
You can enrol in PrepL from the age of 15 years and 11 months, so that you can finish the course and get your learner licence on your 16th birthday. The minimum age for the licence itself is 16, with rare exceptions for people who can show a special need. You can complete the course on a compatible smartphone, tablet or computer.
Exam pattern
| Part | Detail |
|---|---|
| Course length | About 4 to 6 hours, done at your own pace |
| Learning sections | Driving attitude, signs and rules, and sharing the road |
| Final test | 30 multiple-choice questions |
| Pass mark | 90 per cent correct |
| Assessment | Built into the course and unlocked as you finish each learning stage |
Marking and results
You need 90 per cent on the final test. If you do not pass, you must wait 24 hours before trying again, and you do not pay again for retakes. Your identity must be verified before the licence is issued, and this can be done at any stage of enrolment.
Fees
PrepL costs the same as the written road rules test. You pay once and have access for 12 months from enrolment. The fee amount is not stated on the pages used here, so check the Queensland Government site for the current figure.
How to apply
Enrol and set up an account on the PrepL service portal.
Complete the course and pass the final test.
Apply for your learner licence.
There is also a separate PrepL Supervisor course for people who will supervise a learner.
After the exam
A Queensland learner licence is valid for three years, and unused time does not carry over to a P1 provisional licence. Learners under 25 must complete 100 hours of supervised driving and record them in the learner logbook. Having someone else complete PrepL for you leads to a six-month ban on re-enrolling and a large fine.
Preparation tips
Work through all three learning sections before attempting the final test, since the assessment is unlocked stage by stage.
Allow a full session of four to six hours. A connection of at least 1.5 Mbps is needed.
Use the 24-hour gap after a failed attempt to revisit the sections you found hardest.
What score do I need on PrepL?
You need 90 per cent on the 30-question final test.
Can I retake the PrepL test?
Yes. Wait 24 hours between attempts. No extra fee is charged for retakes during your 12 months of access.
Can I still take the written road rules test?
Yes, for now. The written test is available at licence service centres until PrepL replaces it.
