The four Listening tasks
| Task | What you hear | Questions |
|---|---|---|
| Listen and Choose a Response | One spoken line. It is not shown on screen. | Pick the best of 4 written replies. |
| Listen to a Conversation | Two people talking for about 20 to 30 seconds. | 2 questions |
| Listen to an Announcement | A campus or class announcement of about 20 to 30 seconds. | 2 questions |
| Listen to an Academic Talk | A short lecture of about 90 seconds. | 4 questions |
Each recording plays once. You may take notes. Like Reading, the section has two modules and your first-module result picks the second. Each module starts with Choose a Response, then conversations, announcements and talks; the easier second module usually has no academic talk.
Tips
- In Choose a Response, decide what kind of reply fits (an answer, an offer, a refusal) before you read the options; distractors often sound right but answer a different question.
- In talks, note the main idea and each example the speaker gives for it.
- Do not wait for a word you expect: speakers paraphrase, so listen for meaning.
