Overview
In Peru, a teacher becomes a permanent (appointed, or "nombrado") teacher in a public school by winning a place in the Concurso Público de Ingreso a la Carrera Pública Magisterial (CPM). This is a merit contest run by the Ministry of Education (Minedu) under the Teacher Reform Law (Ley N.° 29944). It is widely known as the "nombramiento docente" contest. Winners are appointed to a permanent post in a public Educación Básica school.
The most recent contest for Educación Básica teachers was the 2024 edition, which offered close to 50,000 posts. As of January 2026, Minedu was still using the 2024 contest's merit tables to hire teachers on contract for the 2026 school year. Minedu has also run a separate 2025-2026 entry contest for teachers in Educación Técnico-Productiva.

Who can apply
The contest is for people with a teaching qualification ("título de profesor") or a bachelor's-level licence in Education ("licenciado en Educación"). Applicants must also meet the general requirements published for each contest. When you register, you choose the region and the local education office (UGEL or DRE) where you want a post. You also choose the registration group (grupo de inscripción) you will compete in and the city where you will sit the national test.
Levels or stages
The contest has two stages, and you must pass both to be placed on a merit table.
Etapa Nacional (national stage)
All applicants sit a national written test, the Prueba Nacional, run by Minedu. In 2024 it lasted 2 hours 30 minutes and covered general skills plus teaching knowledge, applied to real classroom situations. It was scored out of 200 points.
Because so many people registered, the 2024 test was split across two dates (30 August and 1 September 2024), with a different paper on each date. Applicants were allowed to keep their question booklet, and Minedu later published the booklets with their answer keys.
Etapa Descentralizada (decentralised stage)
Applicants who pass the national test then move to the decentralised stage, run by evaluation committees at each UGEL or DRE. The committees check that applicants meet the general requirements and confirm any legal bonus points. They then assess applicants in three ways:
watching the applicant lead a learning activity
reviewing the applicant's professional track record
a personal interview
Marking and results
To qualify for the decentralised stage in 2024, you needed at least 110 of the 200 points on the national test. At least 84 of those 110 points had to come from the teaching-knowledge (pedagogical) section.
In the 2024 contest, about 223,000 applicants sat the national test, and 63,978 of them (28.7%) qualified for the decentralised stage. Preliminary results came out on 13 September 2024, with a window to file complaints until 16 September 2024. Final results followed later that month. Applicants can see their detailed score in Minedu's individual results app ("Consulta Individual") by entering their DNI and password.
Important dates
The 2024 contest followed this timeline:
Registration: 15 to 29 April 2024
National test: 30 August or 1 September 2024 (each applicant was told their date and test venue on 19 August 2024)
Preliminary national results: 13 September 2024
Final national results: published in September 2024
How to apply
Registration is online, through the contest website on Minedu's teacher evaluation portal (evaluaciondocente.perueduca.pe). Before you register, check the preliminary list of posts. You can update or confirm your post choices later, when the post list is updated, during the windows set in the contest timetable.
On test day in 2024, test venues opened from 7 to 8 a.m. only, and applicants could bring nothing but their DNI or foreign resident card (carné de extranjería).
After the exam
Applicants who pass both stages are ranked on merit tables. They then take part in public allocation events held by each UGEL and DRE, where they choose a post in score order and are appointed to it.
The merit tables are also used for contract hiring. For the 2026 school year, teachers on the 2024 merit tables could apply for contracts based on their national test results, by submitting documents to their chosen UGEL between 30 January and 3 February 2026.
Preparation tips
Teaching knowledge carries most of the minimum score you need: 84 of the 110 points. Give most of your study time to the pedagogical content for your level and subject area. Work through the past booklets and answer keys that Minedu publishes after each test, so you get used to its question format before test day.
