Overview
The PADI Open Water Diver course is the beginner scuba certification from the Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI). It has three steps: step 1 is eLearning (the theory, which PADI calls Knowledge Development), step 2 is shallow-water pool dives, and step 3 is open water certification dives. PADI says certification lets you dive with a buddy or with a dive professional.

Who can apply
PADI's stated baseline for starting is:
Age: 10 or older. Divers aged 10 to 14 earn a Junior Open Water Diver certification, which upgrades to Open Water Diver at age 15.
Swimming: a 200 metre or yard swim, or a 300 metre or yard swim with mask, snorkel and fins, plus a 10-minute float or tread of water.
Health: good physical health. You complete a standard medical questionnaire, and if a condition is flagged, a doctor's sign-off is needed before you can enter the water.
Exam pattern
The theory part is PADI eLearning, which you study at your own pace by reading, watching videos and taking quizzes, online or in the PADI app. PADI's page does not describe a separate final theory exam or give a pass mark, so ask your dive centre or instructor how the knowledge assessment is done. PADI puts eLearning at 5 to 10 hours.
Marking and results
The practical part is the pool dives and four open water dives. The whole course can be finished in as little as 2 to 4 days, depending on the dive centre's schedule. PADI's page does not state the skills or scoring used in the water.
How to apply
Start with eLearning, or book all three steps through a PADI dive centre, which will help you buy the eLearning and schedule steps 2 and 3. You can do steps 2 and 3 at a local dive centre, at one on holiday, or split them. The eLearning fee covers theory only, including the digital manual and an eRecord of completion. The dive centre charges separately for in-water training and for renting gear, and prices vary by location.
