Overview

Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) offer trade-based vocational courses under the Craftsmen Training Scheme (CTS), regulated by the Directorate General of Training (DGT) under the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship. Trades affiliated to the National Council for Vocational Training (NCVT) are examined nationally by DGT through the All India Trade Test (AITT); trades affiliated to a State Council for Vocational Training (SCVT) are examined by the state instead.

Who can apply

Entry qualification depends on the trade: prerequisites across ITI trades range from a Class 8 pass to a Class 12 pass. Course duration also varies by trade, typically from six months to two years, split into six-month semesters.

Exam pattern

For CTS trades, the AITT theory exam is a computer-based test: about 75 questions worth 150 marks in total, covering Trade Theory (plus Workshop Calculation & Science and Engineering Drawing for engineering trades) for 100 marks and Employability Skills for 50 marks, within a two-hour window. Practical exams are conducted separately by the training institutes themselves. AITT for CTS trades is held twice a year.

Marking and results

A candidate needs at least 33% in both Trade Theory and Employability Skills to pass. Candidates who don't clear the exam get up to three supplementary attempts in addition to the regular one, for a total of four attempts.

After the exam

Candidates who pass receive a National Trade Certificate (NTC), issued through NCVT, which is recognised for recruitment to relevant posts in central and state government departments as well as private employers.

How to apply

Admission to an ITI is through your state's own ITI admission portal, since seats and counselling are managed state-wise. Exam registration, hall tickets, results and certificates for NCVT trades are handled through DGT's national systems, including the Skill India Digital Hub.

Preparation tips

  • Confirm your trade's exact entry qualification and course duration on your state ITI portal before applying, since these vary by trade.

  • Practise past AITT-style objective questions for Trade Theory and Employability Skills, since the theory exam is fully computer-based and time-bound.
