Who can apply
BLS is designed for healthcare providers and others whose job requires a healthcare-level CPR certification, such as nurses, doctors, EMS personnel, and allied health students, though anyone can take the course.
Exam pattern
The course combines video-based or instructor-led teaching of BLS skills with hands-on skills practice and testing, covering single-rescuer and team CPR, AED use, and relief of choking in adults, children and infants. Candidates must pass a skills test demonstrating correct technique, and most course formats also include a written exam.
Marking and results
Successful candidates receive an AHA BLS Provider card, valid for 2 years, after which a renewal course is required.
How to apply
Candidates book a BLS course through an AHA Training Center or an approved AHA instructor, choosing a classroom, blended (online plus in-person skills check), or instructor-led format.
