Overview
The Bhutan Certificate of Secondary Education (BCSE) is the Class X school-leaving examination conducted by the Bhutan Council for School Examinations and Assessment (BCSEA). It sits at the end of a two-year course of study covering Classes IX and X: Class IX is assessed internally by the school, while Class X is examined externally by BCSEA. Passing BCSE is the usual route into Class XI, the first year of Bhutan's two-year Higher Secondary programme (a separate exam, BHSEC, is taken at the end of Class XII).

Who can apply
Candidates are typically around 15–16 years old, the normal age range for Classes IX and X in Bhutan's school system. A student must have completed Class IX (or its recognised equivalent) and gone through the full two-year Class IX–X course before sitting the Class X board exam. Regular candidates registering for the exam are required to have at least 90% attendance. Candidates do not apply individually: schools register their students with BCSEA, matching each candidate's name, date of birth and Citizenship Identity Card (CID) or Nationality Certificate details against official records.
Exam pattern
Every candidate takes compulsory papers in Dzongkha, English and Mathematics. Beyond these, schools offer a Science group (Physics, Chemistry, Biology) and a Social Studies group (History, Civics, Geography, Economics), along with other electives such as Information and Communication Technology (ICT) or Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) subjects where a school offers them. English and Dzongkha are each examined as two separate papers. All subjects except Dzongkha (and foreign languages for foreign candidates) are taught and examined in English.
Marking and results
Each subject is marked and reported as a score, and BCSEA declares an overall result for each candidate. For the December 2025 sitting, 12,414 candidates from 147 schools (136 government and 11 private) registered, 12,316 appeared, and the overall pass rate was about 82.7%. Results are usually declared roughly two months after the exam: the 2024 cycle's results were declared on 4 February 2025, and the 2025 cycle's results were declared in February 2026.
Important dates
BCSE (Class X) is held in December each year, with results following in February of the next year. Exact dates are set and announced by BCSEA ahead of each cycle and can shift for administrative reasons, so candidates should confirm the current year's schedule through their school or the BCSEA website.
How to apply
Candidates do not register directly with BCSEA. Their school submits the registration online during the window BCSEA sets each year, after verifying each student's personal details, attendance and CID/Nationality Certificate record.
After the exam
BCSEA publishes Class X results through its own website and portal, and the Ministry of Education and Skills Development also posts the result announcement. Results can also be checked through the government's citizen services portal or by SMS, and schools receive copies for their candidates. A pass in Class X is the main route into Class XI and Bhutan's Higher Secondary programme, which ends in the separate BHSEC (Class XII) examination.
Preparation tips
Since Dzongkha, English and Mathematics are compulsory for every candidate, build a steady routine around these three subjects rather than leaving them until the end. For the Science or Social Studies group, focus on the specific subjects your school has entered you for, since combinations can differ between schools. Because Class IX marks come from school-based internal assessment and only Class X is externally examined, keep attendance and coursework steady through Class IX as well — it is the foundation the Class X syllabus builds on.
