Overview
UGC NET (University Grants Commission National Eligibility Test) determines eligibility for two things in Indian universities and colleges: appointment as Assistant Professor, and the award of Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) together with Assistant Professor eligibility. The test has been conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) in Computer-Based Test mode since December 2018, and it runs twice a year, in June and December cycles.

Who can apply
Performance across two papers — Paper I and Paper II — decides a candidate's outcome. A candidate who meets only the Assistant Professor standard cannot receive a JRF award; a candidate who meets the higher JRF standard qualifies for both, but institutions and state governments still apply their own recruitment rules on top of NET eligibility when hiring. The exam covers a large number of subjects — the December 2023 cycle, for example, was conducted across 83 subjects.
Exam pattern
The exam is held in a single sitting with no break, and consists of two papers:
| Paper | Focus |
|---|---|
| Paper I | Common paper for all candidates, testing teaching and research aptitude |
| Paper II | Subject-specific paper, based on the subject the candidate has chosen |
The official site does not publish the exact number of questions, marks or duration on its general pages; candidates should confirm these from the current cycle's Information Bulletin before the exam, since NTA can revise the pattern between cycles.
Passing criteria and results
Results and scorecards for each cycle are issued through cycle-specific NTA portals (for example, a dedicated site for the June 2025 cycle), and certificates for JRF/Assistant Professor eligibility are downloaded from the same cycle portal once declared.
How to apply
Applications are submitted online at ugcnet.nta.ac.in. Candidates first complete an initial registration (name, date of birth, mobile number, email) to receive an application number, then log in to fill in academic and personal details, choose a subject and preferred exam cities, upload photo and signature, and pay the fee.
Preparation tips
Read the current cycle's Information Bulletin in full before applying — exact question counts, marks and negative-marking rules can change between cycles, and the bulletin is the authoritative source.
Since Paper I is common to every candidate regardless of subject, prepare it early and revise it separately from your subject paper.
Keep track of which NTA portal your cycle's results and certificate will be issued through, since this is cycle-specific rather than a single permanent URL.
What is UGC NET actually for?
It determines eligibility for appointment as Assistant Professor, and separately for the award of Junior Research Fellowship along with Assistant Professor eligibility, in Indian universities and colleges.
How often is UGC NET held?
Twice a year, in June and December cycles, as a Computer-Based Test.
If I qualify for Assistant Professor only, can I still get JRF later?
No — JRF is awarded based on meeting the higher JRF standard in that cycle; qualifying only for the Assistant Professor standard does not carry over into a JRF award.
Does qualifying UGC NET guarantee a teaching job?
No. NET establishes eligibility; actual appointment still follows the recruitment rules of the specific university, college, or state government.
