Overview
The DGT theory test is the first exam for a Spanish driving licence. It is set by the Dirección General de Tráfico (DGT), and passing it leads to the practical tests on a closed track and on open roads.

Who can take it
You can apply up to three months before reaching the minimum age for the licence category. You need a psychophysical fitness report from an authorised medical centre, valid for 90 days when you submit the request.
Exam pattern
The theory test is a questionnaire of 30 questions on road-safety subjects. The DGT says its online practice tests follow a similar format and number of questions.
Fees
The fee is 94.05 euros (tasa 2.1) for each licence class you apply for. It covers two attempts; if you fail both you must apply again and pay again.
How to apply
Submit form Modelo 04 with the medical report, proof of payment and original ID (DNI, passport or residence authorisation). You can do this online through the DGT electronic registry, or in person at a traffic office. Recovery exams after a licence loss include three attempts.
After the exam
A passed theory test is valid for two years. If you do not finish all requirements within that time, you must retake the exams. The pass also exempts you from the theory test for other licence categories within the same two years. After the final pass you receive a provisional licence, valid in Spain for about three months, before the card arrives by post.
