Who can take it
The test is required for foreign residents who apply for Spanish nationality by residence. Minors and people whose legal capacity has been modified by a court are exempt, according to Instituto Cervantes.
Exam pattern
The paper has 25 multiple-choice questions to be answered in a maximum of 45 minutes. Most questions have three options. The test is on paper, taken in person.

| 1 | 10 | Government, institutions and citizens' rights |
| 2 | 3 | True or false statements on constitutional matters |
| 3 | 2 | Territorial organisation and geography of Spain |
| 4 | 3 | Culture, art and history |
| 5 | 7 | Everyday life, social behaviour and administrative procedures |
Syllabus
Content falls into two areas: government, legislation and citizen participation in Spain; and Spanish culture, history and society. Instituto Cervantes publishes a preparation manual for the test.
Marking and results
You need at least 15 correct answers out of 25 (60 percent) to be rated Apto (pass). Instituto Cervantes says results are communicated about 20 days after the test. The certificate is valid for 4 years from the date the grading report is approved.
Important dates
For 2026, sessions are held monthly except August and December. The remaining 2026 sessions are on 24 September, 29 October and 26 November; registration for these closes on 3 September, 8 October and 5 November respectively. Registration for 2027 sessions opens on 23 November 2026. All sessions are held in Spain only.
Fees
The registration fee is 85 euros. It covers up to two attempts: if you fail or miss the first, the second must take place within 6 months at the same centre.
How to apply
Register online through the Instituto Cervantes shop and choose a date and centre. You can ask for a refund within 14 days of registering, and you can change date or centre while registration for both sessions is open and places remain. On the day, bring your registration receipt, original passport and your residence card (TIE) or equivalent identity document.
