Overview

PTE Core is a computer-based English test from Pearson, built for everyday, non-academic English rather than study skills. It is approved by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) as proof of English ability for Canadian economic immigration — including Express Entry and most Provincial Nominee Program streams — and for Canadian citizenship applications.

PTE Core is a separate test from PTE Academic. PTE Academic is built for university and college admissions and is not accepted by IRCC for immigration purposes; candidates applying to Canadian immigration or citizenship programmes must take PTE Core specifically, not PTE Academic.

Who can apply

There is no nationality restriction. Test takers must be at least 16 years old; those aged 16 or 17 must submit a signed parental or guardian consent form before taking the test. A valid, original passport is required for identity verification at the test centre — photocopies and digital copies are not accepted, and the name and photo on the ID must match the test taker's profile and appearance.

Exam pattern

PTE Core is a single sitting of about two hours, taken on a computer at a test centre, covering four skills across three timed sections.

SectionApproximate durationTask types
Speaking & Writing50 minutesRead aloud, repeat sentence, describe image, respond to a situation, summarise written text, write an email
Reading30 minutesReading fill-in-the-blanks, multiple-choice questions, re-order paragraphs
Listening30 minutesSummarise spoken text, listening fill-in-the-blanks, multiple-choice questions, highlight incorrect words, select missing word, write from dictation

Speaking and writing tasks are mixed together in the first section because several of them draw on both skills at once — for example, reading a short text and then writing a summary of it, or listening to a prompt and giving a spoken response.

Marking and results

PTE Core is scored automatically by Pearson's AI scoring engine, with no examiner interview. Each of the four skills — Listening, Reading, Speaking, Writing — gets its own score on a 10–90 scale, alongside an overall score.

Skill scores are converted individually to Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) levels, the scale IRCC uses to assess English ability. Skills are not averaged or compensated against each other — the CLB level that counts for a programme's requirement is set by the weakest of the four skills. For 2026, published conversions place CLB 7 (the common Express Entry minimum) at roughly Listening 60, Reading 60, Speaking 68 and Writing 69, and CLB 9 (the higher Express Entry benchmark) at roughly Listening 82, Reading 78, Speaking 84 and Writing 88.

Score reports are typically ready within two business days of the test, and test takers are notified by email when the report is available in their myPTE account.

Important dates

PTE Core does not run on a small number of fixed sitting dates the way some language tests do. Test centres that offer it generally run sessions on most days of the week, and seats can often be booked as little as 24 hours before a test date, subject to availability at the chosen centre. For 2026, exact availability depends on the test centre and city chosen; test takers should check live seat availability directly on Pearson's booking page before relying on a specific date.

Fees

The PTE Core fee is set per country/region and is shown in full, in local currency, during booking on Pearson's official site. For test takers in Canada, published 2026 pricing has been in the region of CAD 340–360, but the figure shown at checkout on the official booking page is the one that applies — fees can change and may include additional charges for bookings made close to the test date.

How to apply

Registration is done online through Pearson's PTE website. Test takers create an account, enter personal details that match their passport, choose a test centre and date using the availability checker, and pay the fee online to confirm the booking. Bookings can be rescheduled or cancelled afterwards from the same account, subject to Pearson's rescheduling and refund terms current at the time.

Preparation tips

Pearson publishes its own PTE Core preparation materials, which are the most reliable practice since they use the same scoring engine as the real test: the Official Guide to PTE Core (strategies and sample answers), a single-use Scored Practice Test matched to the real test's timing and format, an AI Practice tool with instant feedback, and a 20-hour self-study Preparation Course. Because most tasks are typed or spoken into a microphone rather than handwritten, practising on a keyboard and headset under timed conditions before test day is worthwhile.

Is PTE Core the same test as PTE Academic?

No. They are two different Pearson tests. PTE Academic is designed for university and college admissions; PTE Core is designed for everyday English and is the version IRCC accepts for Canadian immigration and citizenship. A PTE Academic score cannot be used in place of PTE Core for an immigration application.

What PTE Core score do I need for Express Entry?

It depends on the CLB level required by the programme or the score a candidate wants for Comprehensive Ranking System points. As a reference point, CLB 7 corresponds to roughly 60 in Listening and Reading and the high 60s in Speaking and Writing, while CLB 9 needs scores in the high 70s to high 80s across all four skills. The lowest of the four skill scores sets the CLB level that counts.

How long does it take to get PTE Core results?

Most test takers receive their score report within two business days of taking the test. An email notification is sent once the report is ready to view in the myPTE account.

Can I take PTE Core without a fixed exam date?

Yes. Unlike tests with a handful of sitting dates per year, PTE Core is offered on most days at participating test centres, and seats can often be booked within 24 hours of the test, subject to availability.
