National Firefighter Selection

Overview

The National Firefighter Selection process is a set of shared assessment tools used to select firefighters in the UK. The National Firefighter Ability (NFA) tests are the written ability tests within it. They assess candidates against part of the National Firefighter Personal Qualities and Attributes, to find people with the potential to become effective firefighters.

This page rests on the government's December 2009 technical manual for the NFA tests, which is the only source read for it. Test formats, timings and administration may have changed since, and individual fire and rescue services run their own campaigns, so check the service you are applying to.

Who can apply

The manual covers the tests, not eligibility. No firefighting knowledge or training is needed to answer the questions, and the content was written so that people without direct experience of the role are not disadvantaged.

Exam pattern

The manual describes three multiple-choice tests, set in firefighting-themed scenarios:

TestWhat it coversQuestionsTime
Working with NumbersCalculations using numerical information such as gauges, hose lengths and community fire safety data3245 minutes
Understanding InformationUnderstanding and interpreting written material such as memos, newsletters and safety information2530 minutes
Situational Awareness and Problem SolvingChoosing the best of four options in a described situation, to show you can keep yourself and others safe and solve problems30The manual's overview table gives 35 minutes

The manual says the tests were administered on paper booklets and answer sheets, marked by computer scanning. Current delivery may differ.

Marking and results

Answer sheets were scored by computer.

Preparation tips

The manual describes a practice booklet for the NFA tests so that candidates can get used to the style of the scenario questions. Ask the recruiting service whether it provides one. Because each test is timed, practise answering scenario questions within the time limit.

What do the NFA tests cover?

Working with Numbers, Understanding Information, and Situational Awareness and Problem Solving.

Do I need firefighting knowledge for the NFA tests?

No. The manual says no specific knowledge or training as a firefighter is needed to answer the questions correctly.
