Who can apply
Age: you can apply from 17, but on appointment you must be at least 18 and no more than 57. The application form checks that you are at least 17 and no more than 57 by the end of the application window.
Nationality: you must be eligible to work permanently in the UK.
Education: at least 5 GCSEs (or equivalent) at grades A* to C, including English Language.
Computer literacy: enough to work effectively as a constable, tested at several stages. No formal IT qualification is required.
Exam pattern
1. Online application. One application per person, made only through joinpsni.co.uk, including an equality monitoring form. You can declare reasonable adjustment needs. You should get an email within ten working days of submitting.
2. Initial Selection Test (IST) and evidence upload. The IST is online, hosted on the SHL TalentCentral platform, and has two parts: Verify Interactive - Deductive Reasoning and the Global Skills Assessment. Neither is set in a policing context. Both must be attempted, and their scores are added together and compared with one pass mark. You have one opportunity per campaign, there are no exemptions for earlier attempts, and parts are timed. The IST may be re-taken at the assessment centre. Candidates who pass upload evidence of the education criterion and of their right to work in the UK.
3. Assessment centre. Held in and around Belfast, set in a policing context where you take the role of a constable, with written exercises and role plays. It assesses you against the College of Policing's Competency and Values Framework (three values: courage, respect and empathy, public service; six competencies).
4. Vetting. You must give honest and complete answers and a checkable three-year history. Applicants who lived outside the UK or Ireland in the last three years may need a criminal-record certificate from those countries.
5. Physical Competence Assessment (PCA). A circuit of running, crawling, climbing, balancing, lifting, carrying, dragging and weaving, completed three times in 4 minutes 30 seconds. If you fail you are invited to one re-test after twelve weeks and can attend five support sessions first.
6. Online learning. About 16 hours of e-learning within 4 weeks.
7. Health assessment. With an Occupational Health Nursing Adviser, and possibly a Medical Adviser. Key standards include vision (for example near vision N6, normal visual fields, no severe colour deficiency) and hearing limits.
8. Substance misuse test. A hair test, normally arranged with the health assessment.
Important dates
The IST briefing page says the campaign launched in October 2026 and that the Student Officer IST is expected to be open around mid-December 2026, with exact dates to be confirmed in the invitation email.
How to apply
Apply through joinpsni.co.uk during an open application window, using the "Apply Now" button. Do not submit duplicate applications.
