Overview

Kharidar is a mid-level non-gazetted (Non-Gazetted First Class) civil service position in Nepal's government administration, recruited through a competitive examination run by the Public Service Commission (Lok Sewa Aayog). It is one of the most commonly sought entry points into the Nepali civil service for candidates with an intermediate-level education.

Who can apply

Applicants must be Nepali citizens, generally holding at least an intermediate-level (10+2 or equivalent) qualification, and meeting the age range set out in the specific vacancy announcement published by the Public Service Commission.

Exam pattern

The examination generally has three stages: a preliminary written examination (objective/multiple-choice), a main written examination (subjective/descriptive), and an interview for candidates who pass both written stages. Content covers general knowledge, Nepali language and administration-related subjects relevant to the Kharidar post.

Marking and results

Final merit ranking combines the main written examination and interview scores; candidates who do not clear the preliminary stage do not proceed to the main examination.

How to apply

Applications are submitted online through the Public Service Commission's official portal, within the window stated in the specific vacancy announcement (which may be open (khula) or for specific inclusion/reserved categories).

After the exam

Candidates who pass all stages are appointed to a Kharidar post within the relevant government office, subject to a probationary period before confirmation.

Preparation tips

Because the preliminary exam filters a large pool of applicants before the main written exam is even taken, building strong objective-question speed and accuracy for the preliminary stage, alongside separate descriptive-writing practice for the main exam, reflects how the two stages actually filter candidates.

How many stages does the Kharidar exam have?

Three: a preliminary written examination, a main written examination, and an interview.

Who conducts the Kharidar examination?

The Public Service Commission (Lok Sewa Aayog) of Nepal.
