Overview

The Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) recruit new personnel into the Kenya Army, Kenya Navy and Kenya Air Force through periodic nationwide recruitment drives, announced publicly and conducted at designated recruitment centres (typically stadiums or grounds) across the country's counties.

Who can apply

Applicants must be Kenyan citizens, generally aged between 18 and 26 years (exact limits vary by entry category, such as general recruit versus specialist or officer-cadet entry), hold at least a KCSE certificate with a minimum grade set for the specific recruitment round, meet height and chest-measurement standards, and be free of disqualifying medical conditions, tattoos in visible locations, or a criminal record.

Exam pattern

Recruitment day assessments typically include document and age verification, physical measurement (height, chest, weight), a physical fitness test (such as timed runs and basic fitness drills), and a medical examination; shortlisted candidates proceed to further vetting and, for some entry categories, written aptitude testing before final selection.

How to apply

Recruitment is announced publicly (through national media and the KDF's official channels) ahead of each round, with candidates required to appear in person, with original academic and identity documents, at their designated recruitment centre on the announced date; there is generally no fee charged for recruitment.

After the exam

Candidates who pass all stages at the recruitment centre and subsequent vetting are enlisted and report for basic military training before being posted to a unit.
