Overview
UTBK-SNBT (Ujian Tulis Berbasis Komputer - Seleksi Nasional Berdasarkan Tes) is Indonesia's computer-based national test for admission to Perguruan Tinggi Negeri (PTN, public universities and institutes). It is run by SNPMB (Seleksi Nasional Penerimaan Mahasiswa Baru), the national body that organises PTN admissions.
SNBT is one of three main pathways into Indonesian public higher education:
SNBP (Seleksi Nasional Berdasarkan Prestasi) - an achievement-based route using school academic records, open only to eligible students nominated by their school.
SNBT - this test-based route, open to a much wider pool of candidates who sit the UTBK.
Jalur Mandiri - each PTN's own independent admission route, with its own test, fee and schedule, run after SNBP and SNBT.
Since a 2023 reform, the UTBK no longer tests individual school subjects (physics, chemistry, biology, and so on). It tests scholastic potential and literacy/reasoning skills instead, on the basis that these predict university readiness better than rote subject recall.
Who can apply
SNBT 2026 is open to:
Students of SMA/MA/SMK or an equivalent school who are in their final year (kelas 12) in 2026, holding a Surat Keterangan Siswa Kelas 12 (or equivalent) issued by their school, with no maximum-age restriction for this group.
Graduates of SMA/MA/SMK or an equivalent school from 2024 or 2025, holding their ijazah, subject to a maximum age of 25 years as of 1 July 2026.
Holders of a Paket C equivalency certificate (or current final-year Paket C learners), subject to the same maximum age of 25 years as of 1 July 2026.
Candidates must also hold a valid NISN (Nomor Induk Siswa Nasional) and, for school-based applicants, their school's NPSN (Nomor Pokok Sekolah Nasional), both used to register an SNPMB account. Health or physical conditions that would prevent completing a chosen study programme may be checked separately by the receiving PTN after selection.
Exam pattern
The UTBK for 2026 has two components, both scholastic/reasoning-based rather than subject-knowledge-based:
| Component | Sub-tests | Questions |
|---|---|---|
| Tes Potensi Skolastik (TPS) | Penalaran Umum (general reasoning) | 30 |
| Tes Potensi Skolastik (TPS) | Pengetahuan dan Pemahaman Umum (general knowledge and understanding) | 20 |
| Tes Potensi Skolastik (TPS) | Pemahaman Bacaan dan Menulis (reading comprehension and writing) | 20 |
| Tes Potensi Skolastik (TPS) | Pengetahuan Kuantitatif (quantitative knowledge) | 20 |
| Tes Literasi | Literasi dalam Bahasa Indonesia | 30 |
| Tes Literasi | Literasi dalam Bahasa Inggris | 20 |
| Tes Literasi | Penalaran Matematika (mathematical reasoning) | 20 |
For 2026, the full test runs for about 195 minutes (roughly 3 hours 15 minutes) across both components, sat in one sitting at a computer-based testing centre. Candidates applying to an arts or sport study programme additionally submit a portfolio alongside their UTBK result.
Marking and results
UTBK scores are calculated using Item Response Theory (IRT) rather than simple raw counting. Each question's weight depends on how it was answered across the whole national cohort: a question many candidates get wrong is treated as harder and worth more when answered correctly, while an easy question adds less. There is no penalty for a wrong or blank answer, so a blank answer and a wrong answer both score the same (zero) on that item - guessing carries no downside.
Each candidate receives a scaled score per sub-test and an overall UTBK score, used by each PTN to rank candidates against the applicant pool for the specific study programmes they chose, rather than against a single fixed national cut-off.
Important dates
For 2026, SNPMB's published schedule was:
SNPMB student account registration: 12 January - 7 April 2026.
UTBK-SNBT registration: 25 March - 7 April 2026.
UTBK fee payment: 25 March - 8 April 2026.
UTBK test sessions: 21 - 30 April 2026, run as a single 10-day window with a morning and an afternoon session each day.
SNBT results announcement: 25 May 2026.
UTBK score certificate download window: 2 June - 31 July 2026.
Exact dates are set by SNPMB each year; candidates should check the current SNPMB portal before relying on a specific date.
Fees
For 2026, the UTBK registration fee is Rp200,000. The fee is paid during the registration window and is non-refundable once paid, regardless of the reason. Eligible low-income candidates may qualify for a fee waiver or support through Indonesia's KIP Kuliah (Kartu Indonesia Pintar Kuliah) scheme, administered separately from the UTBK registration itself.
How to apply
Register an SNPMB student account at the SNPMB portal using NISN, NPSN (for school-based applicants) and date of birth, then verify the account by email.
Complete the UTBK-SNBT registration form on the portal within the registration window, including choosing study programmes (prodi).
Select up to 4 study programmes, ranked by preference. Combining academic and vocational programmes across 3 or 4 choices follows SNPMB's mix rules for that year (for example, 3 choices require at least 1 vocational programme if more than 1 vocational choice is made, and 4 choices require at least 1 Diploma Tiga programme when vocational programmes are included); 1 or 2 choices can be any mix.
Pay the UTBK fee within the payment window; registration is not complete until payment is confirmed.
Download and print the UTBK participant card, which shows the assigned test centre, date and session.
Sit the UTBK at the assigned computer-based testing centre on the scheduled date and session.
After the exam
SNPMB publishes SNBT results on the announced results date. Each PTN ranks candidates for each chosen study programme using their UTBK score (plus portfolio score, for arts/sport programmes), and admission decisions are released per programme rather than as a single pass/fail cut-off for the test as a whole. A candidate's UTBK score certificate, once downloaded, may also be used by some institutions and employers outside the SNBT process during its stated validity window, though its primary purpose is PTN admission for that intake year. Candidates not admitted through SNBT can still apply to PTNs through each university's own Jalur Mandiri route, which has its own test, fee and schedule.
Preparation tips
Practise scholastic and literacy question types rather than subject content, since the post-reform UTBK does not test physics, chemistry, biology or similar subjects directly.
Attempt every question. Because there is no penalty for a wrong answer, leaving a question blank only guarantees zero on that item.
Practise reading-heavy question sets under timed conditions, since Pemahaman Bacaan dan Menulis, Literasi Bahasa Indonesia and Literasi Bahasa Inggris together make up a large share of the total questions.
Review basic quantitative reasoning and mathematical-reasoning question styles (Pengetahuan Kuantitatif and Penalaran Matematika), which focus on applying logic to everyday and real-world number problems rather than advanced formulas.
Plan prodi choices early and check each PTN's and programme's typical competitiveness before finalising your up-to-4 choices, since programme choice affects how your score is ranked.
FAQs
What is the difference between SNBT and SNBP?
SNBP uses a student's school academic record and is open only to students nominated by their school based on past performance. SNBT is the test-based route: any eligible candidate who registers can sit the UTBK and have their score used for PTN admission, regardless of school nomination.
Can a Paket C graduate take the UTBK-SNBT?
Yes. Paket C graduates (and current final-year Paket C learners) can register for SNBT, subject to the same maximum age of 25 years as of 1 July 2026 that applies to other non-current-year graduates.
Does getting a question wrong reduce my UTBK score?
No. UTBK scoring uses Item Response Theory, and a wrong answer scores the same as a blank answer on that question. There is no negative marking, so attempting every question carries no downside.
How many study programmes can I choose for SNBT?
Up to 4, ranked by preference, across academic and/or vocational programmes. Choosing 3 or 4 programmes with vocational options follows SNPMB's mix rules for that intake year (for example, requiring at least one Diploma Tiga programme in some combinations); choosing 1 or 2 programmes has no such restriction.
