Overview

The GSAT (學科能力測驗, General Scholastic Ability Test, often called 學測) is Taiwan's main national university entrance test. It is run by the College Entrance Examination Center (大學入學考試中心, CEEC). It measures core academic ability at the end of senior high school, and its results are used mainly for the "star plan" recommendation (繁星推薦) and application (申請入學) admission routes, and they can also be used for the distribution route (分發入學). Each university department decides which GSAT subjects it counts and how.

This page follows the CEEC's 2027 admission-year guide (116 學年度, ROC year 116). The guide is in Chinese, and dates below are converted to the Gregorian calendar.

Who can apply

Students in the third year of senior high school, graduates, and people with equivalent academic standing under the Ministry of Education's rules can apply. Third-year students register through their school. Graduates and equivalent candidates can register through a registered cram school or on their own.

Exam pattern

Candidates choose which subjects to sit. There are six subjects.

SubjectTimeContent
Chinese (國文), part 1: composite language ability (國綜)90 minRequired Chinese curriculum
Chinese, part 2: writing (國寫)90 minFree-response writing only
English (英文)100 minRequired English
Mathematics A (數學 A)100 minYear 10 mathematics and Year 11 Mathematics A
Mathematics B (數學 B)100 minYear 10 mathematics and Year 11 Mathematics B

Question types can include single-choice and multiple-choice questions, fill-in questions (Mathematics A and B only), mixed questions and written-response questions. The writing part of Chinese is all written response.

The 2027 schedule is: Friday 22 January, Mathematics A in the morning and Natural science in the afternoon; Saturday 23 January, English in the morning, then the Chinese composite part and the writing part in the afternoon; Sunday 24 January, Mathematics B in the morning and Social studies in the afternoon.

Marking and results

  • Single-choice questions give full marks for a correct answer and zero otherwise.

  • Multiple-choice questions are marked by option. A question with n options is scored at (n minus 2k)/n of its marks if k options are wrong, and zero if the result is below zero or nothing is answered.

  • Fill-in questions in Mathematics need every blank correct and have no deduction.

  • The Chinese score combines the two parts equally: the composite part (out of 100) counts for half, and the writing part is out of 50, so the raw score is 0.5 times the composite score plus the writing score.

Results are given as grades from 0 to 15 for each subject, found by comparing each raw score with the average of the top 1 percent of candidates in that subject. For the distribution route, the CEEC also provides the results on a 60-grade scale. The CEEC publishes five benchmarks for each subject: top, front, average, back and bottom, set at the 88th, 75th, 50th, 25th and 12th percentiles.

Important dates

For the 2027 exam (116 學年度):

  • 27 October to 10 November 2026: registration.

  • 22 to 24 January 2027: exam.

  • 25 February 2027: results published, with score reports sent the next day.

  • 26 February to 4 March 2027: period to request a score review.

Fees

For the 2027 exam, a candidate who registers through a school or cram school pays a base fee of NT200plusNT200 plus NT170 per subject. A candidate who registers individually pays a base fee of NT250plusNT250 plus NT170 per subject. For example, four subjects cost NT880throughagroupandNT880 through a group and NT930 individually. Candidates from low-income households pay nothing and those from middle-to-low-income households get a 60 percent reduction, with documents required during registration.

How to apply

Third-year students register through their school. Other candidates register on the CEEC online registration system, upload a photo (and an ID image if they are new to CEEC), print a payment form, and pay within the deadline. Registration is complete only when the fee is paid.

After the exam

Universities use the GSAT results for the three admission routes: the star plan, application and distribution. The CEEC's guide notes that how each department uses the scores is set in that route's own admission brochure.

Is the GSAT the same as the AST?

No. The GSAT tests core ability and is held in January. The AST (分科測驗) tests advanced subjects and is held in July.

Can I choose which GSAT subjects to take?

Yes. Candidates may choose freely, but each university department decides which subjects it counts, so check the admission rules of the departments you want.

What is the GSAT score scale?

Each subject is reported on a 15-grade scale, and the CEEC also gives a 60-grade version for the distribution route.
