Overview

The Mathematik-Olympiade in Deutschland is a long-running school mathematics competition. It is run through the association Mathematik-Olympiaden e.V., which also keeps an archive of past problems, with each federal state organising its own early rounds.

Who can take part

Students from Grade 3 upward can take part, with problem sets for Grades 3 and 4, 5 and 6, 7 and 8, 9 and 10, and the upper school.

Levels or stages

There are four rounds in each competition year.

RoundTiming
School roundStart of the school year
Regional roundMid-November
State roundEnd of February of the following year
Federal roundMay or June, held centrally in one state, with two exam days of three problems each (4.5 hours per day)

The first three rounds are organised by each federal state. The federal round is open to students from Grade 8. For Grades 3 to 7 the competition ends with the state round and a prize ceremony run by the state.

How to apply

Students normally join through their school, which runs the school round. Rules vary by state, so ask your school or your state's organiser.

Preparation tips

Use the archive of earlier problems kept by Mathematik-Olympiaden e.V. and practise writing out complete reasoning for each answer.

Note

Round dates and class details were taken from the federal competition portal summary rather than the association site itself. Check with your state organiser for exact dates.

Does everyone reach the federal round?

No. It is open only to students from Grade 8 who progress through the school, regional and state rounds.
