Who can take part
Students working toward the Abitur or another university entrance qualification at German schools, including German international schools, may take part. Vocational students are typically not eligible.
Levels or stages
| Round | Format | 2026 deadline |
|---|---|---|
| Round 1 | Four problems done as homework | March 2, 2026 |
| Round 2 | Four problems done as homework | August 24, 2026 |
| Round 3 | A one-hour discussion with mathematicians (a colloquium, with no problem-solving) | February 2027 |
Each of the first two rounds has four problems from elementary mathematics, covering geometry, combinatorics, number theory and algebra. You need not solve all four to take part, but you must solve at least three to qualify as a prize winner. The whole contest spans about 14 months.
Marking and results
Rounds 1 and 2 award certificates and monetary prizes. Federal winners are automatically admitted to the German Academic Foundation (Studienstiftung des deutschen Volkes) when they enrol at university, and may receive other special prizes.
How to apply
Register and submit solutions through the competition website by each round's deadline. Check the page for the next cycle's dates, since the 2026 dates above belong to the cycle already under way.
Preparation tips
Study published problems and solutions from earlier rounds, and write out complete, clear proofs. Rigorous written solutions matter more than speed.
Do I have to solve all four problems?
No, but to qualify as a prize winner you must solve at least three.
