Overview

The All Ireland Linguistics Olympiad (AILO) is a contest where secondary school students across the island of Ireland solve puzzles about languages, such as deciphering unfamiliar scripts and codes. No prior knowledge of linguistics or of any foreign language is needed. It is run by the ADAPT Centre, which is funded by Science Foundation Ireland, and was established in 2009.

Who can enter

Secondary school students on the island of Ireland.

Format and timing

The AILO season runs from September to March. Teachers are encouraged to register early so they receive monthly training materials. The pages reviewed do not give the round format, dates or fees, so check the AILO website for the current year.

After the competition

Winners qualify for the International Linguistics Olympiad (IOL), which has been held yearly since 2003. Ireland has taken part since 2009.

Preparation tips

Try past AILO problems, which rely on logic and pattern-spotting rather than knowledge of any language.

Do I need to speak another language?

No. The puzzles need only logical thinking.
