Overview

Yrkesexamen is a general term for a vocational qualification in Sweden. This page covers the higher vocational education route (yrkeshögskolan, YH), whose authority is the Swedish National Agency for Higher Vocational Education (Myndigheten för yrkeshögskolan, MYH). Upper-secondary vocational programmes are not covered here.

MYH decides which education providers may run YH programmes and gives them state funding. Its site also covers national vocational education (nationell yrkesutbildning), which the agency has been responsible for since 2024, and validation of a person's skills carried out by industry.

Learning at work

YH programmes include learning at a workplace, called LIA (lärande i arbete). MYH describes it as a way for employers to meet future staff and make sure the skills they need are taught.

How to apply

YH programmes are run by individual providers. MYH has a page for finding current programmes; use it to see what is offered and how to apply. As of 2026 MYH says new rules for yrkeshögskolan are being introduced in stages, so check the agency's news before applying.
