Overview
This is the public technical and vocational education system run by the Technical and Vocational Education and Training Authority (TVETA) of Afghanistan. It is a system of schools and institutes rather than a single national exam, so there is no one exam pattern, fee or date to list. The authority's pages are mainly in Dari, and this page is based on those.
According to the authority, TVETA was set up as an independent body, separate from the Ministry of Education, in Thawr 1397 in the Afghan solar calendar (April to May 2018; the source uses the solar calendar). It manages schools and institutes in 34 provinces, with services in 231 districts.

Types of training
The authority describes three kinds of technical and vocational education.
Formal TVET, delivered by schools and institutes that award an official certificate. This is the part TVETA manages directly.
Non-formal TVET, mostly short courses of 3 to 12 months run by about 11 other ministries and agencies. The Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs, for example, runs it through public and private institutes.
Informal TVET, which is on-the-job learning with market and private-sector apprenticeships.
Programme lengths
Formal TVETA institutions offer four kinds of programme.
| Programme | Grades |
|---|---|
| Special education | 1 to 12 |
| Two-year programme | 13 to 14 |
| Three-year programme | 10 to 12 |
| Five-year programme | 10 to 14 |
The authority's page cites a total of 86,211 public and private students across these four programmes. It does not give a date for that figure.
Fields of study
TVETA lists 109 fields of study as of 2026. They include areas such as construction, electrical and electronics, mechanics, agriculture and animal science, mining, oil and gas, aviation, tourism and hotels, information technology and web design, accounting and banking, and a number of special-education options for deaf and blind students. The full list is on the authority's website.
