Overview
自考 (the Self-Study Higher Education Examination, 高等教育自学考试) is a Chinese national higher-education credential system organised by the Ministry of Education's National Education Examinations Authority (NEEA), together with provincial education examination authorities. Rather than requiring enrolment in a fixed-length degree programme, it lets a candidate earn a higher-education qualification by studying independently (with optional tutoring support) and passing a set of standardised, course-by-course national exams.

Who can take it
The system is built around individual self-study, with optional social tutoring support, and state-administered exams; there is no fixed classroom attendance requirement, and candidates work through the required courses for their chosen major at their own pace.

| Unit of assessment | Each course in the candidate's chosen major has its own standardised exam |

| Oversight | NEEA's management system and specialised subject committees coordinate with provincial education examination authorities |
What it covers
Course content and exam outlines are set per subject and published by NEEA (and, for some courses, by provincial authorities) so that self-study candidates and tutoring providers work from the same official material.

自考 qualifications are issued under the national higher-education examination system organised by the Ministry of Education's examination authority.
How to register
Candidates register for individual course exams through the national or their province's education examination authority platform, working toward completing all required courses for their chosen major.
