Overview
SLIATE (Sri Lanka Institute of Advanced Technological Education) is a Sri Lankan government institute that runs Higher National Diploma (HND) programmes across multiple fields, such as business finance, tourism and hospitality management, and English, among others. An HND is not a single standardised exam; it is a diploma-level qualification, and each HND programme has its own entry rules and, for some programmes, its own selection test.

Who can take it
Applicants must have sat the G.C.E. Advanced Level (A/L) examination, generally in the year of application or a recent preceding year. Each HND programme sets its own subject-stream and grade requirements at A/L, and most also require an ordinary pass in English and Mathematics at the G.C.E. Ordinary Level (O/L). Preference is generally given to full-time applicants under a set age limit and to applicants from the most recent A/L sitting.
Structure or exam pattern
| Step | What happens |
|---|---|
| Eligibility check | Applicant's A/L stream, A/L grades and O/L English/Mathematics passes are checked against the chosen HND programme's requirements |
| Shortlisting | For some programmes, eligible applicants are shortlisted for further selection |
| Written test and interview | Shortlisted applicants for some programmes sit a written test and attend an interview |
| Final selection | Selection is on merit, combining written test and interview performance where these apply |
Programmes that do not require a written test or interview select applicants directly by merit on their A/L results against available places.
What it covers
There is no single national syllabus for SLIATE admission; entry depends on the applicant's A/L stream and grades, and, where a written test applies, on content relevant to the specific HND programme.
Recognition
HND qualifications are awarded by SLIATE, a government-run institute for advanced technological and professional education in Sri Lanka.
How to register
All applications must be submitted online through the official SLIATE application portal (apply.sliate.ac.lk); SLIATE states that applications outside this portal are not accepted.
Preparation tips
Check the specific A/L stream, grade and O/L English/Mathematics requirements for your chosen HND programme before applying, since these differ by programme.
Where a written test and interview apply, prepare with the subject areas relevant to that specific HND programme.
Is there one common SLIATE entrance exam?
No. Entry is mainly based on G.C.E. A/L results against each HND programme's own requirements; some programmes add a written test and interview for shortlisted applicants.
Do all SLIATE HND programmes need an O/L pass in English and Mathematics?
Most do, in addition to programme-specific A/L subject and grade requirements, but applicants should confirm the exact requirement for their chosen programme.
Where should applications be submitted?
Only through the official SLIATE online application portal, apply.sliate.ac.lk.
