Overview

NPTEL (National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning) is a joint initiative of the IITs and IISc, funded by India's Ministry of Education, and was launched in 2003. It provides free online courses, hosted on the government's SWAYAM platform, with an optional paid certification exam. NPTEL says it holds more than 70,000 hours of video content, making it one of the largest repositories of engineering and science courses online.

Who can take it

Enrolment is open and free to anyone; there is no entrance requirement to join a course. NPTEL offers close to 600 courses for certification each semester across about 22 disciplines, mainly engineering, basic sciences, and some humanities and management subjects.

What it covers

Courses span engineering disciplines, basic sciences, and a smaller set of humanities and management subjects, each built and taught by faculty from the IITs and IISc.

Scoring and results

A certificate is awarded only to learners who register for and pass the paid, in-person proctored exam, in addition to meeting the assignment-score threshold; assignments alone, without the exam, do not earn a certificate.

How to register

Learners enrol for free through the SWAYAM portal (swayam.gov.in) or NPTEL's own course portal (onlinecourses.nptel.ac.in), then separately register and pay for the certification exam if they want a certificate for that course.

Is NPTEL free?

Enrolling in and learning from NPTEL courses is free. Only the optional certification exam carries a fee, Rs 1,000 per course as stated by SWAYAM.

Do I need to take the exam to get a certificate?

Yes. A certificate requires passing the in-person, proctored certification exam in addition to meeting the minimum assignment score; course participation alone does not earn a certificate.

Who runs NPTEL?

It is a joint initiative of the IITs and IISc, funded by India's Ministry of Education, delivered through the government's SWAYAM platform.

How long are NPTEL courses?
