Overview
The Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE) is Malawi's national secondary-school leaving examination, administered by the Malawi National Examinations Board (MANEB) at the end of Form 4, the final year of secondary school. It is the main qualification used both to certify completion of secondary education in Malawi and to determine eligibility for admission to public universities, colleges and teacher training institutions.
Who can apply
School (internal) candidates: students completing Form 4 in a registered public or private secondary school are registered for MSCE by their school. A teacher designated by the school's approved MANEB examination centre enters each candidate's details and subject choices on MANEB's registration portal.
Private (external) candidates: people who are repeating the examination, who studied outside the regular school system, or who otherwise did not register through a school can register as external candidates at an approved MANEB examination centre within the registration window, and pay the applicable fees themselves.
Exam pattern
Candidates must enter for a minimum of six subjects on their first attempt. English must always be among them, and the Ministry of Education also requires Mathematics on a candidate's first entry. Beyond these two, candidates choose their remaining subjects from the list MANEB publishes each year, which covers sciences (such as Biology, Physics and Chemistry), languages (such as Chichewa and French), humanities and social subjects (such as History, Geography and Bible Knowledge or Religious and Moral Education), and technical and business subjects (such as Agriculture, Computer Studies, Business Studies, Home Economics and Metalwork).
Most subjects are examined through one or more written theory papers; subjects with a practical or performance component (for example Agriculture, Computer Studies, Home Economics, Technical Drawing and the languages) also carry a practical, project or oral/listening paper alongside the written papers.
Marking and results
Each subject is graded on a numeric scale from 1 (best) to 9 (worst):
| Grade | Category |
|---|---|
| 1–2 | Distinction |
| 3–6 | Credit |
| 7–8 | Pass |
| 9 | Fail |
The exact mark ranges that map to each grade are set by MANEB separately for every subject once marking and moderation are complete, so they can vary from subject to subject and from year to year.
The MSCE certificate is awarded to a candidate who meets either of two conditions: a pass in six subjects, including English, with at least one of those passes at credit level or above, or a pass in five subjects, including English, with at least three of those passes at credit level or above. Candidates who sit more than six subjects have their best results counted toward these conditions.
For the 2026 MSCE sitting, 188,169 candidates sat the examination and 111,510 passed, a national pass rate of 59.26%.
Important dates
Dates shift from year to year, so always check MANEB's current circular. For the 2026 MSCE sitting: registration opened on 10 November 2025 and closed on 15 December 2025; the written examinations ran from 29 June to 24 July 2026; and MANEB released the results on 7 September 2026. In earlier years the sitting fell later in the year — the 2025 MSCE examinations, for example, ran from 1 to 25 July 2025, after registration that opened in September 2024 — so the exact months can move between cycles under MANEB's academic-calendar planning.
Fees
Candidates in public day and boarding secondary schools do not pay examination or identity-card fees for MSCE, as these are covered under Malawi's free secondary education policy. Candidates who must pay — including private schools (where applicable) and external/private candidates — are charged a combination of subject fees, an entry fee, an administration fee, a centre fee, an identity-card processing fee, and, for external candidates, a form fee, all settled through MANEB's e-payment platform. The reports reviewed for this page did not give a reliable current amount in Malawi Kwacha, so confirm the exact fee schedule on MANEB's registration circular for your year before paying.
How to apply
School candidates are registered by their school: the designated examinations teacher at the school's approved MANEB centre enters each candidate's personal details and subject choices on MANEB's online registration system, which generates a payment invoice (where a fee applies) for the candidate or their guardian to settle directly with MANEB, not through the school.
Private candidates register in person at an approved MANEB examination centre within the registration window MANEB announces for that year's sitting, providing personal identification, their choice of subjects, and paying the applicable fees, including the external-candidate form fee.
After the exam
MANEB releases MSCE results nationwide, with each candidate receiving a result slip showing their subject grades. Besides certifying secondary-school completion, MSCE results are the main qualification Malawi's National Council for Higher Education (NCHE) uses for public university admission: NCHE's harmonised selection rules require at least six credit passes (grade 6 or better), including English Language, for consideration, on top of any specific subject requirements set by the university, faculty or programme a candidate applies to. Candidates with lower grades, or who do not meet a particular programme's requirements, can still use their MSCE results to apply to technical colleges, vocational training institutions and teacher training colleges, which set their own entry requirements.
Preparation tips
Make sure your subject entry includes English and Mathematics, as both are required on a first entry, and choose your remaining subjects with your intended post-MSCE path in mind.
Practise past MANEB papers for each subject: question styles and paper structures tend to repeat from year to year.
Pay particular attention to subjects with a practical, project or oral/listening component (for example Agriculture, Computer Studies, Home Economics, Technical Drawing and the languages) — these are assessed separately from the written papers and need their own preparation.
If you want to apply to a public university afterwards, aim for at least six credit passes, including English, since that is NCHE's minimum bar for consideration.
Confirm your registration details, examination centre and candidate number with your school (or with MANEB directly, if registering as a private candidate) well before the registration window closes.
FAQs
How many subjects do I need to register for MSCE?
A minimum of six on your first entry. English must be among them, and the Ministry of Education also requires Mathematics on a first entry. You can enter for more than six subjects.
How is the MSCE certificate awarded?
You need either a pass in six subjects, including English, with at least one credit pass, or a pass in five subjects, including English, with at least three credit passes. Your best results count if you sat more than six subjects.
Can I sit MSCE if I did not register through a school?
Yes. MANEB allows private (external) candidates — including repeaters and people who studied outside the regular school system — to register directly at an approved examination centre within the registration window MANEB announces each year, and to pay the applicable fees themselves, including the external-candidate form fee.
What MSCE grades do I need for a public university in Malawi?
Malawi's National Council for Higher Education requires at least six credit passes (grade 6 or better), including English Language, for consideration at a public university, in addition to any specific subject requirements of the programme you apply to.
