Overview
The Exame Nacional para Certificação de Competências de Jovens e Adultos (Encceja) is a Brazilian exam run by INEP (Instituto Nacional de Estudos e Pesquisas Educacionais Anísio Teixeira), an agency of the Ministry of Education. It lets young people and adults who did not finish primary or secondary school at the usual age earn a school-leaving equivalency certificate for Ensino Fundamental (primary/lower-secondary) or Ensino Médio (upper-secondary) by sitting one exam instead of returning to a classroom. Participation is voluntary and free. INEP also runs separate editions for people in custody or under a socio-educational measure (Encceja PPL) and for Brazilians living abroad (Encceja Exterior), each with its own registration window and application sites.

Who can apply
Candidates choose which certification they are attempting when they register. For the Ensino Fundamental certificate, a candidate must be at least 15 years old on the day of the exam. For the Ensino Médio certificate, a candidate must be at least 18 years old on the day of the exam and must not already have completed Ensino Médio. There is no requirement to have been enrolled in a particular prior course; Encceja is aimed specifically at people who left school before finishing that stage. Registration needs a CPF, an RG, a current postal code (CEP) for correspondence, and a gov.br account.
Exam pattern
Encceja tests four knowledge areas plus one essay, at whichever level (Fundamental or Médio) the candidate registered for. Each objective area has 30 multiple-choice questions, for 120 objective questions in total if a candidate sits every area.
| Level | Areas tested | Objective questions | Essay |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ensino Fundamental | Língua Portuguesa, Língua Estrangeira Moderna, Artes and Educação Física (combined into one area); História and Geografia (combined); Ciências Naturais; Matemática | 30 per area (120 total) | Yes, up to 25 lines |
The exam is applied on a single Sunday in two shifts: the morning shift covers Ciências Naturais/Ciências da Natureza and Matemática, and the afternoon shift covers the remaining areas together with the essay. The essay is a dissertative-argumentative text on a theme of social relevance, written on the official answer sheet.
Encceja PPL
Encceja PPL follows the same four-areas-plus-essay structure, at the same two age thresholds (15 for Fundamental, 18 for Médio), but is applied inside prison units and socio-educational units for people in custody and young people under a socio-educational measure involving deprivation of liberty. Registration is done by the unit's pedagogical supervisor through a dedicated INEP system, not by the candidate directly, and participation is free.
Encceja Exterior
Encceja Exterior is a separate edition for Brazilians and foreign nationals living outside Brazil, applied at Brazilian diplomatic posts abroad, with its own registration window and site (distinct from the national edition's Página do Participante). It follows the same certification structure (Fundamental or Médio, four objective areas plus an essay).
Marking and results
Objective areas are scored using Item Response Theory (TRI — Teoria de Resposta ao Item), the same statistical method used in ENEM, which weights each question by its difficulty and by how consistently a candidate's pattern of right and wrong answers matches a plausible level of ability, rather than just counting correct answers. To pass, a candidate needs at least 100 points (on each area's own TRI scale) in every area they sat, and at least 5 out of 10 on the essay. An essay that is blank, off-topic, too short, or does not follow the dissertative-argumentative structure can score zero.
A candidate who passes every area and the essay for a level receives a full completion certificate for that level (Ensino Fundamental or Ensino Médio). A candidate who passes some but not all areas receives a declaration of proficiency for the areas passed, which can be used later together with a re-sit of the remaining areas in a future edition. The certificate or declaration is issued not by INEP directly but by the certifying institution the candidate selects at registration — typically a state education department (Secretaria Estadual de Educação) or a federal institute (Instituto Federal), depending on what is offered in the candidate's state — so the candidate must apply to that institution after results are out to actually receive the document.
Important dates
For the Encceja 2026 cycle: national registration ran from 4 to 15 May 2026, free of charge, exclusively on the Página do Participante. The exam was applied on 23 August 2026. Answer keys were due out by early September 2026, and individual results were scheduled for release on 14 December 2026 on the Página do Participante (CPF and gov.br password login). Encceja PPL 2026 had a separate schedule: prison-unit participation from 15 June to 3 July 2026, candidate registration (via the unit's pedagogical supervisor) from 22 June to 10 July 2026, and the exam applied on 6 and 7 October 2026. Encceja Exterior and Encceja Exterior PPL ran on their own separate registration windows, starting in mid-June of the cycle. Dates move every year, so candidates should always check the current year's edital before relying on these.
Fees
Encceja has no registration fee for any edition — national, PPL, or Exterior. No payment of any kind is required to confirm registration or to sit the exam.
How to apply
Registration for the national edition is done entirely online on the Página do Participante (enccejanacional.inep.gov.br/encceja), using a gov.br login, within the announced registration window. The candidate chooses the certification level (Fundamental or Médio), the certifying institution that will later issue the document, and provides personal data including CPF, RG and a current CEP, which determines the test venue printed on the confirmation card. Encceja PPL candidates do not register themselves — the unit's pedagogical supervisor registers them through a separate INEP system for prison units. Encceja Exterior candidates register through a separate site and window intended for applicants outside Brazil.
After the exam
Results are published on the Página do Participante, accessed with the candidate's CPF and gov.br password. A candidate who reaches the minimum score (100 points per area, 5 points on the essay) in every area for their level receives a completion certificate; a candidate who passes only some areas receives a declaration of proficiency covering those areas, which remains valid for use alongside a later re-sit of the remaining ones. Either document must be requested from the certifying institution chosen at registration (a state education department or federal institute), since INEP itself does not issue the certificate.
Preparation tips
Since each area counts on its own pass/fail threshold, spread study time across all the areas required for the chosen level rather than focusing only on one subject, so no single area is left below the 100-point minimum. Because scoring uses the same Item Response Theory model as ENEM, a steady, consistent pattern of correct answers on easier and medium questions is more valuable than guessing at a few hard ones. Treat the essay as a separate pass/fail hurdle in its own right: practise the dissertative-argumentative structure and stay within the line limit (25 lines for Fundamental, 30 for Médio), since an off-topic or badly structured essay can score zero even if the objective areas are passed.
What does Encceja actually give you?
A certificate (or, for partial passes, a declaration of proficiency) showing completion of Ensino Fundamental or Ensino Médio, issued by a state education department or federal institute that the candidate chooses at registration — a route to a school-leaving equivalency for people who did not finish at the usual age.
Who can take Encceja, and from what age?
Anyone who did not complete the relevant stage of school at the usual age. The Ensino Fundamental certification needs a minimum age of 15 on exam day; the Ensino Médio certification needs a minimum age of 18 on exam day and requires not having already completed Ensino Médio.
How is Encceja scored, and what counts as a pass?
Each of the four objective areas is scored on its own scale using Item Response Theory, and a candidate needs at least 100 points in an area to pass it. The essay is scored from 0 to 10, and at least 5 is needed to pass it. A candidate who passes everything for their level gets a full certificate; passing only some areas gives a declaration of proficiency for just those areas.
Is there a fee, and are there separate versions of the exam?
No — Encceja is free for every edition. Besides the national exam, INEP runs Encceja PPL for people in custody or under a socio-educational measure (registered by the unit's pedagogical supervisor, not the candidate), and Encceja Exterior for Brazilians and foreign nationals living abroad, each with its own registration window.
