Note

The official Examinations Council of Zambia (ECZ) site could not be fetched directly while writing this page. Facts below are corroborated from multiple secondary reports of ECZ's own notices, results announcements and a university admissions notice. Confirm registration windows, exact dates and subject rules for your year directly on the ECZ website before acting on them.

Overview

The Grade 12 School Certificate Examination (SCE) is Zambia's national school-leaving examination, set and administered by the Examinations Council of Zambia (ECZ) at the end of Grade 12, the final year of secondary school. It is the main secondary qualification in Zambia and is normally required for progression to university or college, and for most formal employment. ECZ also runs a separate General Certificate of Education (GCE) sitting for candidates outside the regular school system; since 2021 a GCE result that meets the School Certificate's subject and grade standards is treated as a direct equivalent of the School Certificate.

Who can apply

  • School candidates: students completing Grade 12 at a registered public or private secondary school are registered for the School Certificate Examination by their school, through ECZ's Online Candidate Registration System (OCRS).

  • Private candidates: people repeating, studying outside the regular school system, or otherwise not registered through a school can sit through ECZ's GCE route instead of the October/November school-based sitting, subject to ECZ's own documentation and registration requirements for that year.

Exam pattern

Subjects satCandidates register for a number of subjects offered by their school; secondary reports describe this as commonly up to nine.
Subjects countedECZ uses a candidate's best six subjects to award the School Certificate, and English Language must be among them.
PapersMost subjects are examined through one or more written papers set and marked by ECZ; some subjects include a practical or oral/listening component in addition to the written paper.
SittingRegular school candidates sit as part of the national October/November exam. Private, resit and out-of-school candidates instead sit the separate GCE examination, reported to run in August.

Because the exact current subject-grouping and minimum-subject rules are not confirmed from an official source for this page, treat the subject counts above as indicative, and confirm the current year's rules with your school or with ECZ directly.

Marking and results

ECZ grades Grade 12 subjects on a single numeric scale from 1 (the highest) to 9, with an "absent"/ungraded outcome where a candidate did not sit a paper. Secondary reports describe grades 1–2 as distinction/merit, grades 3–6 as credit-level passes, grade 7 as an ordinary pass, and grades 8–9 as fail; the exact mark ranges behind each grade are set by ECZ after marking and moderation, and can vary from year to year, so treat any percentage ranges you see elsewhere as indicative only.

Candidates' outcomes fall into three tiers reported by ECZ and the Ministry of Education after each sitting:

  • A School Certificate, for candidates who pass at least six subjects — including English Language — with at least one of those a credit (grade 6 or better).

  • A Statement of Results, for candidates who sit the exam but do not meet the School Certificate's pass requirement; it still lists every grade achieved and is used for some employment and further-study purposes.

  • A fail outcome, for candidates who do not meet either standard.

For the 2025 sitting, 194,069 candidates sat the exam; 136,357 (70.26%) obtained a School Certificate, 54,771 obtained a Statement of Results, and 2,941 did not pass — the first time Zambia's School Certificate pass rate has crossed 70%, up from 68.19% in 2024 and 63.93% in 2020.

Important dates

Regular Grade 12 School Certificate exams are reported to run nationally in October and November each year, with results typically announced the following January; GCE exams for private and out-of-school candidates are reported to run separately in August. At the time of writing, ECZ had not yet published a confirmed 2026 Grade 12 timetable that could be checked against a reliable source, so exact 2026 dates are not stated here — check the ECZ website or your school for the current year's registration and exam dates.

For the 2025 sitting, results were announced on 20 January 2026.

How to apply

School candidates are registered as a batch by their school through ECZ's Online Candidate Registration System (OCRS). ECZ has recently added registration features that ask a parent or guardian to confirm a candidate's registration details by SMS or email, and a face-capture step to verify candidate identity, both aimed at improving data accuracy and reducing exam fraud. Private and out-of-school candidates register with ECZ directly for the GCE sitting, following the documentation and fee requirements ECZ sets for that year; regular school candidates in public schools are generally not charged an exam fee themselves, while private and repeat candidates pay a registration fee ECZ sets annually.

After the exam

ECZ issues each candidate a School Certificate, a Statement of Results, or a fail outcome, as described above. The School Certificate (or an equivalent GCE result) is the usual minimum qualification Zambian universities and colleges ask for. For undergraduate admission, the University of Zambia's published 2026 admissions notice asks for at least five credits or better at School Certificate level (or the equivalent), including English Language, with some programmes — Medicine, Law, Public Health and Mines among them — naming additional required subjects such as Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Diploma programmes generally ask for a full Grade 12 Certificate with a smaller number of credits. ECZ has also stated that qualifications presented in Zambia, including university degrees, are expected to be accompanied by a Grade 12 Certificate or its recognised equivalent.

Preparation tips

  • Confirm your registration details — subjects, candidate number and examination centre — with your school well before the sitting, since ECZ's registration system now asks a parent or guardian to confirm these details directly.

  • Make sure English Language is one of your strongest subjects: it must be passed, with a credit in at least one subject overall, for the School Certificate to be awarded.

  • Practise past ECZ papers for each subject, paying attention to subjects that include a practical or oral/listening component, since these need separate preparation from the written paper.

  • If you are not sitting through a school, check with ECZ well in advance about the GCE route and its registration window, since it runs separately from the main October/November school-based exam.

FAQs

What exactly is the ECZ Grade 12 exam called?

It is formally the School Certificate Examination (SCE), set and marked by the Examinations Council of Zambia (ECZ) at the end of Grade 12. ECZ also runs a separate General Certificate of Education (GCE) sitting, mainly for private and out-of-school candidates, whose result is treated as equivalent to the School Certificate when it meets the same standard.

How many subjects count toward my School Certificate result?

ECZ uses a candidate's best six subjects, and English Language must be one of them. Reports describe candidates as commonly registering for more subjects than this (up to nine), but only the best six are used to decide the School Certificate award.

What do I need to be awarded a School Certificate rather than a Statement of Results?

You need to pass at least six subjects, including English Language, with at least one of those a credit (grade 6 or better on ECZ's 1–9 scale). Candidates who sit the exam but do not meet this are issued a Statement of Results instead, which still records every grade achieved.

Can I sit the ECZ Grade 12 exam if I am not enrolled in a school?

Yes. ECZ runs a separate GCE sitting, reported to take place in August, for private candidates, repeaters and people who studied outside the regular school system. Since 2021, a GCE result that meets the School Certificate's subject and grade standards is treated as a direct equivalent of the School Certificate.
