Who can apply
Graduates of a Ministry-recognised medical degree programme, who have completed the required clinical training stage for each exam stage, may apply.
Levels or stages
Stage 1
Taken after completing the basic medical science portion of medical training, testing foundational medical knowledge.
Stage 2
Taken after completing clinical training, testing clinical medical knowledge and competency, and required before full physician registration.
Marking and results
The rules (amended 20 June 2024; the source gives the ROC year 113) say the exam is held once a year, is written, and has two stages. A candidate who fails Stage 1 cannot sit Stage 2, and if Stage 2 is not passed within six years Stage 1 must be passed again. For each stage the pass mark is an average of 60 across subjects, and a zero in any subject means failure.
How to apply
Apply for each stage of the Medical Licensing Examination through the Ministry of Examination's official application system, once you meet the training requirement for that stage.
Preparation tips
Prepare for each stage separately, matching your review to the medical-science or clinical-training content relevant to that stage, since the two stages test different points in medical training.
