Overview

The Oman Medical Specialty Board (OMSB) exams are licensing tests used by the Ministry of Health and other public and private health institutions in Oman. A candidate who wants to work for the Ministry of Health or another health service institution in Oman must sit the OMSB exam for their specialty. The exams are computer-based and are delivered through Prometric, at the OMSB test centre in Muscat.

Who can apply

Registration is open to all candidates. No eligibility ID is needed, no documents have to be uploaded before booking, and there is no separate eligibility fee. The only payment is the exam fee. The published FAQ lists fees for technicians, technologists and physicians, so those are the groups it covers. For the list of exams and specialties offered, candidates are told to write to the test centre. If your specialty is not offered, the Ministry of Health arranges a regular written examination instead.

Exam pattern

Most OMSB exams last 2 hours and have 70 multiple-choice questions. A few exams run 2.5 hours with 100 multiple-choice questions. There is no scheduled break. If you leave the room, the time away counts against your exam time. A short tutorial runs before the test begins. Food, drink and medication are not allowed in the test room, and lockers are provided for belongings.

Syllabus

The exam content for each specialty is not published in the FAQ. The test centre provides the test structure and reference titles on request, but does not supply reference materials.

Marking and results

You receive a score report from the test centre right after the exam. It is issued only once and cannot be reissued. Within one month of the exam you can ask for a certification letter, for which a fee applies. For how long a score stays valid, check with the Ministry of Health.

Fees

As listed on the official FAQ in 2026, the fee is USD 175 for technicians and technologists and USD 195 for physicians. The FAQ gives no year for these amounts, so check the current fee when you book. Rescheduling costs around USD 40. Payment is by Visa, MasterCard or American Express.

How to apply

  1. Go to the Prometric website and choose Schedule My Test.

  2. Enter OMSB as the sponsor and select Oman Medical Specialty Board.

  3. Choose Oman as the country, accept the privacy notice, and answer No to the eligibility ID question.

  4. Select your specialty and choose the Muscat test centre.

  5. Accept the biometric consent, pick a date and time, fill in the required details, and pay.

  6. Prometric emails a confirmation letter. Read it for the identification you must bring.

Available dates usually show for the following week onward. If you cannot get a date or the website fails, contact the Prometric Regional Registration Center.

On exam day, bring the same valid, government-issued passport you registered with. It must carry a signature and a photo. If the passport has no signature, bring a second ID that does. Also bring a copy of your confirmation letter.

After the exam

You can take the exam up to three times in one calendar year. To reschedule or cancel, contact the Regional Registration Center or use the Prometric site at least five full calendar days before your appointment.
