Overview

The Licensure Examination for Teachers (LET) is the licensing test for school teachers in the Philippines. The Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) gives it through the Professional Regulatory Board for Professional Teachers under Republic Act No. 7836. The Board's recent resolutions call it the Licensure Examination for Professional Teachers (LEPT). A valid certificate of registration and professional licence from the PRC are required to practise as a professional teacher, with exceptions the law allows.

Who can apply

On the date of filing, RA 7836 requires that an applicant:

  • is a Filipino citizen, or a foreigner whose country has reciprocity with the Philippines in the teaching profession;

  • is at least 18 years old;

  • is in good health and of good reputation with high moral values;

  • has not been convicted by final judgment of an offence involving moral turpitude;

  • is a graduate of a government-recognised school with the minimum education for the level.

The minimum education depends on the level:

  • Preschool: a bachelor's degree in early childhood education or its equivalent.

  • Elementary: a bachelor's degree in elementary education or its equivalent.

  • Secondary: a bachelor's degree in education or its equivalent with a major and minor, or a bachelor's degree in arts and sciences with at least 10 units of professional education.

  • Vocational and two-year technical courses: a bachelor's degree in the field of specialisation or its equivalent, with at least 18 units of professional education.

Levels or stages

The law makes the elementary and secondary exams separate.

Elementary level

Two parts: general education and professional education.

Secondary level

Three parts: general education, professional education and field of specialisation. The specialisation matches the subject area the candidate will teach.

Syllabus

The Board publishes an enhanced table of specifications for each part. Resolution No. 11 of 2025 amended the 2022 version to bring in the domains of the Philippine Professional Standards for Teachers. Study from the table of specifications for your level and specialisation.

Marking and results

The Board reports each candidate's rating to the PRC within 120 days after the exam. The pass mark and part weights are not stated in the sources used here, so check the current PRC announcement.

Important dates

RA 7836 requires the exam at least once a year, on dates the Board sets with the Commission's approval. PRC announces each sitting, so check its current schedule.

How to apply

The PRC publishes application procedures and requirements for each sitting on its website. Follow the announcement for the sitting you plan to take.

After the exam

Registration starts when your name is enrolled in the roster of professional teachers. After you pay the registration fee you are issued a certificate of registration as a professional teacher.
