Overview

The national nursing examination (看護師国家試験) is the licensing test for nurses in Japan. It is held once a year by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare (MHLW) under the Act on Public Health Nurses, Midwives and Nurses. Passing it is the step that leads to a nurse licence. This page covers the 116th examination, announced on 3 August 2026.

Who can apply

Candidates must fall into one of the groups below. People expected to graduate by 12 March 2027 may apply.

  • Graduates of a nurse training institution designated by the prefectural governor.
