Overview

The EDN (Épreuves Dématérialisées Nationales) are the computer-based written tests of the Épreuves Nationales (EN), the national exam at the end of the second cycle of medical studies in France. The EN decide how students are matched to a medical specialty and a territorial subdivision for the third cycle (internat). They replaced the Épreuves Classantes Nationales (ECN) from the 2024 campaign. The Centre national de gestion (CNG) runs the first EDN session, draws up the lists of students who go on to each stage, runs the national matching procedure and announces the assignments. Military health school students are handled separately.

Who can apply

Students of French medical faculties are registered with the CNG by their own faculty, so you do not apply yourself.

Students from a medical faculty in another EU or EEA state, Switzerland or Andorra register themselves on the CNG platform. For the 2027 campaign the registration window was 1 to 31 July 2026. You upload, as PDFs, a valid identity document and a certificate from your home institution that you validated the penultimate year of basic medical training in 2025-2026, with a sworn translation of any document not in French. The training must meet the EU directive on recognition of professional qualifications (2005/36/EC). You also state a preferred exam centre, and the CNG assigns centres according to their capacity.

Exam pattern

The EN have several parts.

PartWho takes it
First EDN session, organised by the CNGAll registered students
Second EDN session, organised by the universitiesStudents who scored below 14/20 on rank A knowledge in the first session
ECOS (objective structured clinical examinations), held at the same time in all medical universitiesStudents who scored at least 14/20 on rank A knowledge in either EDN session
Training pathway (parcours de formation) score, up to 60, based on supporting documentsAll students

You need at least 10/20 in the ECOS to enter the matching procedure. One registration covers both the EDN and the ECOS.

After the exam

After the EN, the CNG runs the national matching procedure (appariement), which assigns students to a specialty and subdivision. Students follow the steps and see their convocation, marks and matching on their account in the CNG's Even application.
