Overview

The Chartered Professional in Human Resources (CPHR) is a Canadian designation for human resources professionals, granted through provincial CPHR associations. The main exam on the way to it is the National Knowledge Exam (NKE), which tests your understanding of the CPHR Competency Framework at the level of academic knowledge: facts, policies, practices, methods and legislation.

The NKE is developed nationally by CPHR Canada, but each provincial member association administers it for its own members. Passing (or being exempted from) the NKE is one step; the designation also requires an assessment of your HR work experience.

Who can apply

You must be a member of your provincial CPHR association and register with it to write the NKE. Requirements differ slightly by province:

  • CPHR Alberta: you must be an Associate Member. That needs a two-year diploma or degree in human resources, or a non-HR diploma or degree plus the required HR coursework. Official transcripts or an IQAS/WES assessment must reach CPHR Alberta before the registration deadline.

  • CPHR Manitoba: you must hold active membership and meet CPHR Canada's educational requirement, shown by an official transcript or credential assessment sent directly to the association.

You do not need to finish your HR work experience before writing the NKE. Associate Members in Alberta who graduated from a CPHR Canada accredited programme can apply to waive the NKE.

Syllabus

The NKE is built on the CPHR Competency Framework. About 90% of the exam covers the nine HR-specific competency areas and about 10% covers the general competencies.

Marking and results

  • Scores are scaled to a range of 200 to 800.

  • The pass mark is a criterion-referenced standard set at 500.

  • Scaling takes account of both the number of scored questions you answered correctly and the difficulty of your exam version.

  • CPHR Alberta says results come about 8 weeks after the exam; CPHR Manitoba says about four to five weeks. Results go from the exam provider to CPHR Canada, then to your provincial association, which tells you.

  • In Manitoba, writers who fail can ask for a manual score verification within 20 business days of results, for $65.

Attempts: after three unsuccessful attempts you must wait one full year before a fourth. A fifth attempt may be allowed after a review by your provincial association.

Important dates

For fall 2026, the NKE was held on 5 November 2026. The registration deadline, which was also the deadline for accommodation requests, was 11 September 2026. CPHR Alberta asked for membership applications four weeks before that deadline.

Fees

Fees vary by province and are in Canadian dollars.

How to apply

  1. Join your provincial CPHR association in the required membership category.

  2. Have your official transcripts or credential assessment sent directly to the association.

  3. Register for the NKE through your member profile before the registration deadline and pay the fees.

  4. If you need accommodation, send the accommodation and medical forms by the registration deadline.

After the exam

Members who pass the NKE but have not yet completed the experience assessment can use the title "CPHR Candidate" in Manitoba. In Alberta, candidates have 10 years from passing or waiving the NKE to complete the Experience Validation Assessment, and must keep their membership in good standing.

Preparation tips

  • Study the CPHR Competency Framework, since all questions are drawn from it.

  • Use the practice exam and textbook resource list that CPHR Alberta publishes for the NKE.

  • Register early: transcripts can take time to arrive, and late documents mean waiting for the next sitting.
