Overview
ADI Part 1 is the theory test that opens the route to becoming an Approved Driving Instructor in Great Britain. It is run by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA). It is the first of three qualifying tests: Part 1 (theory), Part 2 (driving ability) and Part 3 (instructional ability).
The Part 1 test has two sections taken in one sitting: multiple-choice questions and a hazard perception test. You must pass both sections.

Who can apply
Part 1 is the first step of the ADI qualifying process. GOV.UK says you need a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check before applying. Booking needs your UK driving licence number and your personal reference number from DVSA.
Exam pattern
The test is taken at a theory test centre. It has two sections.
| Section | Format | Time or length |
|---|---|---|
| Multiple choice | 100 questions, 25 from each of four subject areas | 1 hour 30 minutes |
| Hazard perception | 14 video clips of everyday road scenes | Video clips, scored out of 75 |
In the hazard perception section you spot developing hazards, meaning events that would make a driver change speed or direction. Each developing hazard can earn up to 5 points, with a maximum of 75 points.
Syllabus
The multiple-choice questions are split evenly across four subject areas.
Road procedure.
Traffic signs and signals, car control, pedestrians and mechanical knowledge.
The driving test, disabilities and the law.
Publications and instructional techniques.
Marking and results
To pass the multiple-choice section you need at least 85 out of 100 overall, and at least 20 out of 25 in each of the four subject areas. To pass hazard perception you need at least 57 out of 75. Both sections must be passed in the same test.
Results are given at the test centre straight after the test.
Fees
As listed on GOV.UK in 2026, the ADI Part 1 test fee is £81. Other fees listed for the qualifying route include £111 each for Part 2 and Part 3, £140 for a trainee instructor licence and £300 to register as an ADI, with registration renewal of £300 every 4 years.
How to apply
Book through the DVSA theory test booking service on GOV.UK. You will need:
Your UK driving licence number.
Your personal reference number from DVSA.
An email address, although booking by phone is possible without one.
A credit or debit card.
Northern Ireland has a separate booking process. For help, DVSA's theory test customer services can be reached on 0300 200 1122, Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm.
After the exam
Once you pass Part 1, you must pass Part 2 and Part 3 within 2 years, or you have to start the whole process again.
If you pass, you receive a pass certificate letter, which you need to book Part 2. If you fail, you can rebook and resit the full test. The new date must be at least 3 working days after your last test.
Preparation tips
Study all four subject areas, since you need at least 20 out of 25 in each one as well as 85 overall.
Practise hazard perception separately, because it is passed or failed on its own score.
Plan your Part 2 and Part 3 dates early, so that the 2-year window is not wasted.
