Overview
The Thai driving theory test is the written exam for a driving licence issued by the Department of Land Transport (DLT). The DLT website could not be read for this page, so the facts come from two English-language guides and should be confirmed with your local DLT office. This page is thin for that reason.

Who takes it
Both guides say foreign applicants must now pass the written theory test, including people converting a valid foreign licence. One of them adds that holders of an international driving permit are also covered. The sources read here describe the route for foreigners.
Exam pattern
| Item | Detail |
|---|---|
| Format | 50 multiple-choice questions on a computer |
| Pass mark | 45 correct answers out of 50 (90 percent) |
| Languages | Thai and English, according to one guide |
| Topics | Traffic rules, road signs and safe driving practices |
Before the written test, applicants take four short physical checks: colour vision (red, yellow, green), depth perception, side vision and reaction time on a brake pedal. Neither guide gave an exam duration.
Fees and licence validity
Both guides list approximate fees: a 5-year licence at 505 THB for cars and 255 THB for motorcycles, and a temporary 2-year licence at 205 THB for cars and 105 THB for motorcycles (one guide gives a range of 105 to 205 THB for a new motorcycle licence). They describe a first licence as temporary for 2 years, with the 5-year version afterwards. One guide calls these 2026 rates and says they vary by province and exclude the medical certificate. These figures come from guides, not the DLT, so check them at the office.
Preparation tips
Study traffic rules, road signs and safe driving practices, the three areas the guides name.
The 90 percent pass mark leaves room for only five wrong answers, and one guide notes that many applicants fail.
