Who can take it
You can take the theory test about one month before you turn 18 for category B. The practical test requires you to be 18 and to have passed the theory test. Training for category B includes a first-driver course (4 theory hours), at least 10 driving lessons and risk-identification training.
Exam pattern
The test is 30 minutes long and can be taken in Finnish, Swedish or English. It has three parts, and the number of questions depends on the licence category.
| Category | Multiple choice | Picture questions | Risk identification |
|---|---|---|---|
| A1, A2, A (motorcycles) | 20 | 50 | 5 |
| AM, T, B | 15 | 50 | 5 |
| BE, C1, C1E, D1, D1E | 10 | 30 | 5 |
Marking and results
Each part has its own minimum score you must reach. For example, motorcycle candidates need at least 14 of 20 in the multiple-choice part. In the 50-question picture part for category B, Traficom's guidance gives 43 correct answers as the minimum.
Fees
From 1 January 2026 the theory test costs 46 euros (previously 40). The category B practical test costs 110 euros.
How to apply
Book a time through the test provider's booking system and bring identification and your driving-instruction permit documents.
After the exam
A passed theory test is valid for one year. After the practical test you get a test certificate valid for six months, and the licence arrives by post. A category B licence is valid for 15 years.
Preparation tips
Practise picture questions on traffic situations, which make up most of the test.
Practise the risk-identification part separately, since it is scored on its own.
