Overview

The Polish driving licence theory test is the first part of the state driving exam. It is taken on a computer at a regional road traffic centre (WORD, Wojewodzki Osrodek Ruchu Drogowego). Candidates answer questions drawn at random in real time. You must pass the theory part before you can take the practical part of the exam.

The format below is the one the Ministry of Infrastructure describes for the theory exam. The ministry names the number of questions, the time limit and the pass mark for the whole exam, with separate basic and category-specific parts.

Who can apply

Anyone can apply for a licence who has lived in Poland for at least 185 days and either wants a first licence or wants to add a category, provided they meet the minimum age for that category. Gov.pl lists the minimum age for each category on a separate page.

Before the exam you need a candidate profile number (PKK, Profil Kandydata na Kierowce). The steps are:

  1. See a doctor who examines drivers and get a medical certificate.

  2. Submit the licence application with the certificate and a current photo to the district office (starostwo powiatowe, city office, or district office in Warsaw).

  3. Collect the PKK number. It is issued immediately if the application is complete, within 2 days if the office must check your data, and within a month or two if your situation needs more explanation.

  4. Book the exam at the WORD with your PKK number.

A psychological assessment is also required for categories C1, C1+E, C, C+E, D1, D1+E, D, D+E and KA, or when the district head sends you for one. If you turn 18 soon, a parent or guardian must give written consent at the office.

Exam pattern

The theory exam lasts 25 minutes and has 32 questions. Each question has exactly one correct answer. You cannot go back to a question you skipped.

PartQuestionsPoint split
Basic knowledge2010 questions at 3 points, 6 at 2 points, 4 at 1 point
Specialist knowledge (for your category)126 questions at 3 points, 4 at 2 points, 2 at 1 point

Point values reflect importance for road safety: 3 points for high importance, 2 for medium, 1 for low importance for safety or traffic order. The questions describe situations drivers meet in daily traffic.

Marking and results

The maximum score is 74 points. You pass the theory exam with at least 68 points.

Fees

For 2026, Gov.pl lists 100 zl for issuing the driving licence itself, paid at the district office. The pages read do not list the WORD fee for the exam, so check it with your regional WORD.

How to apply

You can learn in two ways. In the first, you enrol in a driving school and take the theory and practical courses, then register for the theory exam at the WORD. In the second, you prepare for theory on your own, register for the theory exam at the WORD with your PKK number, and only take the practical course with a driving school after you pass. In both cases you then register for the practical exam at the WORD.

After the exam

If you pass the practical exam too, the WORD sends the result to your district office. You pay for the licence, and it is ready for collection within 9 working days of the office receiving proof of payment. In more complicated cases it can take up to a month or two. You cannot drive before you hold a valid licence, even if you passed the exams.

A licence is valid for 15 years. Licences for professional categories C and D are issued for up to 5 years. Renewing does not require a new exam.

Preparation tips

  • The Ministry of Infrastructure publishes the exam question database as a spreadsheet for candidates (the catalogue file on the ministry page is labelled July 2026), together with the multimedia files that go with the questions.

  • Practise the video questions, because the questions are shown in real time and you cannot return to one you left unanswered.

  • Weigh your attention by points: a missed 3-point question costs far more than a missed 1-point question when the pass mark leaves only 6 points of room.

How many points do I need to pass the theory exam?

At least 68 out of 74 points.

Can I go back to a question?

No. If you do not answer a question, you cannot return to it.

Do I have to take a course at a driving school first?

No. You can prepare for the theory exam on your own and only take the practical course at a driving school.
