Overview
The kunskapsprov (also called teoriprov) is the Swedish driving theory test run by the Swedish Transport Administration (Trafikverket). This page covers the test for licence category B, which is a car or light truck. Other licence categories have their own test pages on the Trafikverket site.
The test shows that you have the knowledge to drive safely and with care for the environment. You pass it before taking the practical driving test (körprov).

Who can apply
Before you sit the test you must have completed both parts of the risk education (riskutbildning) for a car, and it must still be valid when you arrive. You also need valid ID. If you have no valid ID, you can apply to have someone else confirm your identity. If you are under 18 when you book, the test must be paid at least 25 hours before it starts.

Syllabus
The test covers five areas:
Vehicle knowledge and handling: how the vehicle works, how road conditions affect it, and the risks if it is faulty.
Environment: how transport choices affect the environment and how to drive in a safe, environmentally aware way.
Traffic safety: judgement in dealing with other road users, and adjusting speed and position to different roads and conditions.
Traffic rules: signs, road markings, speed, meeting and overtaking, loads, passengers and duties towards other road users.
Personal conditions: peer pressure, impulsive or deliberate behaviour, and unwillingness to follow rules.
Trafikverket advises learning the whole subject rather than memorising answers, and notes that practice questions found online or from a driving instructor are not the same as the test questions.
Marking and results
You pass with 52 points or more out of the 65 scored points. You see on screen straight away whether you passed, and you can also see the result by logging in to the booking service.
Important dates
A passed car theory test has a limited validity, inside which you must pass the practical test:
If you passed before 19 August 2026, it is valid for 4 months.
If you pass on or after 19 August 2026, it is valid for 1 year (a change decided by the Swedish Transport Agency, Transportstyrelsen).
How to apply
Book the test through Trafikverket's booking service. If you need extra support, such as longer test time, an oral test or an interpreter, you can apply for it. This is available for reading difficulties, dyslexia, ADHD, autism, language disorder, and other needs. The test can also be taken in other languages, or with an interpreter.
After the exam
After the theory test, you take the practical driving test. It starts with a safety check and then includes city and country road driving. If you take it in an automatic car, your licence gets condition 78, which allows only automatic cars.
