Overview
To get a driving licence in Jordan you pass two tests at the Drivers and Vehicles Licensing Department (DVLD): a computer-based theory test on traffic rules, followed by a practical driving test. Before either test you must complete lessons at a licensed driving school. DVLD branches are spread across the country, and you apply at the branch for your area of residence.
Who can apply
Reports give a minimum age of 18 for a private car licence.
You need a certificate of competency from a licensed driving training centre, reported as covering 20 theory lessons and 40 practical lessons.
You must pass a medical check, including an eye examination, at the department.
Documents reported as required:
Jordanians: a valid national ID card (a passport or military appointment certificate is also mentioned); Gaza Strip residents and children of Jordanian mothers: passport and personal identification card; non-Jordanians: passport and a valid residence permit;
a recent colour passport-size photograph;
the flag service (military service) book, for males born in 1989 or later;
a translation of any foreign licence that is not in Arabic or English.
Exam pattern
| Test | Format | Time | Pass mark |
|---|---|---|---|
| Theory | Computer-based, 60 multiple-choice questions for the private car category (Category 3) | 60 minutes | 85%, at least 51 correct answers out of 60 |
| Practical | Driving test with examiners, recorded by cameras | Reported as about 15 to 30 minutes | 75 out of 100 for private vehicles; 80 out of 100 for public vehicles |
In the practical test, two examiners record scores independently.
Syllabus
Theory test. Questions cover traffic priorities (right of way, about 25% of the test), traffic signs, first aid and basic vehicle mechanics. Intersection diagrams asking which vehicle has the right of way come up often. The official study manual is published by the Jordanian Traffic Institute.
Practical test. Examiners assess:
preparing the car, starting it and moving off, and using the gears correctly;
control and handling;
turning, bends, and hills and slopes;
following traffic signs, lights, lanes and priority rules at junctions;
overtaking and meeting other traffic;
stopping, sudden stops and keeping a safe distance;
dealing with other road users;
reversing and parking.
Fees
As reported in 2026:
| Item | Fee |
|---|---|
| First-time application (application, medical check, stamps and the first theory test) | 26.50 JOD |
| Vehicle rental for each practical test | 5 JOD |
| New practical test date after a failure | 15 JOD |
| First licence, valid for ten years | 33.20 JOD |
The fee for retaking the theory test is reported differently by different articles (5 JOD and 10 JOD), so check it at the DVLD.
How to apply
Complete theory and practical lessons at a licensed driving school and get its certificate of competency.
Go to the DVLD branch for your area with your documents and fill in the service form.
Have your documents checked and take the eye and medical examination.
Pay the fees. The officer books the earliest free slot in the theory test hall, sometimes on the same day.
After passing the theory test, a practical test date is set. Practical appointments can also be managed through the DVLD e-services site.
If you pass the practical test, pay the licence fee and the licence is issued.
After the exam
If you fail the theory test, you can retake it after paying the fee; one report says at least two weeks must pass. If you fail the practical test, the examiners explain your mistakes and you can book a new test at least 14 days later after paying the fee. A first licence is issued for ten years.
Preparation tips
Study the Jordanian Traffic Institute manual, especially priority rules and signs.
Practise with intersection diagrams until you can work out the right of way quickly.
Take computer-based mock tests so the format is familiar before test day.
