Overview

The code exam is the theory (highway code) part of the Algerian driving licence test. The Ministry of the Interior's licence page covers the legal basis, minimum ages, the application file and validity, but it does not describe the code exam itself. Confirm exam details with your driving school or the provincial road safety delegation.

Who can apply

The minimum age depends on the category:

  • 16 years for category A1 and the matching category F.

  • 18 years for categories A, B and the matching category F.

  • 25 years for categories C1, C2, D and E.

Licence stages

New drivers first receive a probationary licence (permis probatoire), valid for two years. The file is filed at the commune of residence and includes a provisional aptitude certificate issued by the licence examiner. The definitive licence is applied for at the commune once the probationary licence has expired.

Fees

A stamp of 1,000 DA applies to the classic licence and a payment of 1,000 DA to the biometric licence, for both the probationary and the definitive licence.

After the exam

A definitive licence is valid for 10 years for categories A1, A2 and B, 5 years for C1, C2, D and E, and 2 years for category F. Validity is extended by the wali on the basis of a medical certificate.

The legal base given on the page is Law 01-14 of 19 August 2001 on road traffic and Executive Decree 04-381 of 28 November 2004 on road traffic rules.

Important

The number of code questions and the pass mark are not given on the official page, so they are left out here.
