Overview
The Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) issues driving licences in Bangladesh. The route starts with a learner (shishanobish) driving licence for a professional or non-professional licence, followed by a driving skills test, after which the full licence is issued as an e-licence. The details below come from BRTA's Bengali-language citizen's charter.

Who can apply
Applicants need a medical certificate from a registered doctor, a scan of their national ID card, a utility bill as address proof, and a certificate showing at least Class 8 pass or an equivalent. Foreign nationals contact the relevant circle office and also need a passport or work permit copy. A professional licence needs a dope test certificate.
Exam pattern
After the learner licence, you must pass the driving skills test (dokkhota jachai porikkha). The charter does not describe the test format, so confirm it with your BRTA circle office.
Fees
Fees stated in the charter:
| Item | Fee |
|---|---|
| Learner licence, one class (motorcycle, three-wheeler or light vehicle) | 518 taka |
| Learner licence, any two classes | 748 taka |
| Re-examination fee | 230 taka |
| Renewing an expired learner licence (valid six months from issue), one class | 518 taka |
| Issue of a non-professional licence | 4,628 taka |
| Issue of a professional licence | 2,838 taka |
An online payment gateway charge applies. Check BRTA before paying, as fees change.
How to apply
Register on the BRTA service portal, attach the required documents and apply online for the learner licence. After passing the skills test, log in to your portal account to pay the fee and make the final application. The e-licence is posted to you, which the charter says takes 15 to 20 working days after payment. You book a biometric appointment after the skills test.
Preparation tips
Learn Bangladesh road signs and traffic rules before the test.
Practise the vehicle class you will use.
Do I need a learner licence first?
Yes. You apply for a learner licence online first, and the full licence follows once you pass the driving skills test.
How long is a learner licence valid?
Six months from the issue date. An expired one can be renewed by paying the fee again, according to the citizen's charter.
