Overview

In Bulgaria the driving theory exam is a test made up of questions drawn from an official published bank, set by the Executive Agency Automobile Administration (ИААА). The question bank is published on the agency's site, split by licence category and by the candidate's situation (for example, no prior licence, holding another category, or regaining a lost licence). Candidates often call these question sets "listovki". The rules below come from Ordinance No. 38 as published on the agency's site, with amendments up to 2021. Check the agency site for later changes.

Exam pattern

Test size, scoring and time depend on the category.

Different, shorter tests apply when a candidate already holds another category, for example C1, D, C+E and D+E, which have their own point totals and a 20-minute limit.

The test is taken on an electronic device. The ordinance requires the device to save the answers and attach five photos taken at random moments during the exam. Candidates who do not speak Bulgarian can take the theory exam as an electronic test in one of the languages the agency publishes on its site.

Questions come from the published bank for the relevant category. Study the bank for your category and situation in full, since test questions are drawn from it.

How to apply

Candidates train at an authorised training centre and are then entered for the theory exam. The ordinance sets out the conditions and procedure. The agency's site does not state fees in the pages read for this review, so confirm them with the agency or your training centre.
