Overview

The Bhutan Communications and Transport Authority (BCTA) runs the online driving theory test used for Bhutanese driving licences. The Road Safety and Transport Authority introduced the eTest in Phuentsholing from 5 January 2018, and it has since spread to Thimphu and other regional offices. The aim was to cut paperwork and processing time and reduce favouritism in licensing.

How to apply

The pages used here do not describe booking or fees. Contact BCTA Transport Services on +975-2-321284 or by email (bcta, at the bcta.gov.bt domain) for application details.

After the exam

Candidates must secure the required pass mark, which is not stated on the page used here. Other reports describe a practical test, including a box test and a highway drive, after the theory test, but confirm the steps with BCTA.

Preparation tips

  • Learn Bhutan's traffic signs and rules thoroughly, since the test is based on them.

  • Expect random questions, so cover the whole syllabus rather than memorising a fixed set.

How long is the BCTA eTest?

It has 20 multiple-choice questions at 2 marks each, and lasts 30 minutes.

Are all candidates given the same questions?

No. Questions are randomly generated from a question bank for each candidate.
