Overview
The RTA (Roads and Transport Authority) Theory Test, usually called the Knowledge Test, is the written stage of getting a driving licence in Dubai. It checks understanding of traffic laws, road signs and driving risk, and must be passed before a learner can move on to practical driving lessons and the road test.

Before sitting the Knowledge Test, learners must complete a set number of theory lectures at their driving institute: 8 hours for light vehicles, motorcycles and light/heavy buses, 9 hours for heavy vehicles, and 4 hours for light/heavy equipment.
Fees
For 2026, the standard Knowledge Test costs AED 220 (including a AED 20 knowledge and innovation fee). Adding remote interpretation brings the total to AED 420, the same total charged for an Instant Test booked under specific circumstances.
How to apply
Learners book a Knowledge Test slot online using UAE Pass or Emirates ID login, through the RTA website, its mobile apps, its chatbot, or directly through their driving institute. After choosing a date and language and completing payment, the appointment is confirmed by SMS and email.
After the exam
Passing the Knowledge Test lets a learner proceed to practical driving lessons and, eventually, the on-road driving test, the final stage before a full Dubai driving licence is issued.
Preparation tips
Attend all the required theory lectures at your driving institute before booking the test, since this is a precondition, not just a suggestion.
Request the remote interpretation option in advance if you prefer to take the test in a language other than the ones offered by default.
