Overview
The Sproochentest is the Luxembourgish language exam taken by people applying for Luxembourg nationality. It is run by the Institut national des langues (INLL). It follows the Grand Ducal Regulation of 22 July 2019 on the Luxembourgish language exam used in nationality procedures. The INLL calls it the only certification accepted for the nationality application. Passing the State's own Luxembourgish test taken before becoming a civil servant does not replace it.

Who can apply
The exam is for people covered by article 14 of the law of 8 March 2017 on Luxembourgish nationality. The INLL's FAQ describes the audience as anyone who wants to apply for Luxembourg nationality and must take the language tests.
Exam pattern
The test has two compulsory oral parts, both taken in the same half day. Candidates sit them at the INLL in Luxembourg City (Glacis) or in Belval.
| Part | Level | Time | Format |
|---|---|---|---|
| Oral expression | A2 | 10 minutes | Interview, then a visual description |
| Oral comprehension | B1 | 35 minutes | Listening on a tablet, written answers |
Oral expression. The first 5 minutes are an interview on an everyday topic such as work, family or leisure. You choose one of two topics offered by the examiner. In the second 5 minutes you pick one of three visual items and describe it. Assessors look at range, fluency, clarity, use of grammar, coherence, how well you make yourself understood, and interaction.
Oral comprehension. You listen to three texts: a radio message, a conversation about daily life, and an exchange or presentation on a set topic. A questionnaire goes with each, and you tick the correct answer.
Marking and results
To pass, you need at least half of the points in oral expression. A score below half in oral expression can be made up by the comprehension score. In that case the test counts as passed if the average of the two parts is at least 50%.
Important dates
Sessions are listed in the INLL events calendar and on the MyINL enrolment portal. No fixed dates are given on the exam page.
Fees
As listed on the INLL FAQ in 2026, the registration fee is 75 euros, a figure set by Grand Ducal Regulation. A candidate who withdraws without a valid reason, or does not turn up, is not refunded and must register again.
How to apply
Register through the MyINL portal and choose an available session. The registration file needs identity documents, such as a foreign passport, an identity card, a refugee or stateless travel document, or a residence card. A candidate with a disability must attach an official medical document, and the INLL then arranges support.
After the exam
The certificate has no expiry date. There is no limit on how often you can register, but you can register again only after you have received the result of the previous attempt.
Preparation tips
Look at the INLL's sample interviews, photos, listening file and answer sheet, which are posted on the exam page.
Practise describing a picture in simple sentences for about five minutes.
Practise following short radio and conversation recordings for the main points, since the comprehension part is rated at B1.
Is there a written part in the Sproochentest?
No. Both compulsory parts are oral: expression and comprehension. Comprehension answers are marked on a questionnaire after listening on a tablet.
Does the certificate expire?
No. The INLL states that the certificate is valid without limit of time.
