Overview
The Danish language tests (Danskprøver) are the official exams for adult foreigners learning Danish. The Danish Agency for International Recruitment and Integration (SIRI) publishes the test dates and fees, and the tests are held at language centres. There are four tests: Prøve i Dansk 1 (PD1), Prøve i Dansk 2 (PD2), Prøve i Dansk 3 (PD3) and the Studieprøven (SP). Each has a written part and an oral part.

Who can apply
You register directly with the language centre where you want to sit the test. Students on a state Danish course register through their centre: PD1 is taken on module 5 of Danskuddannelse 1 and PD3 is the final test of module 5 of Danskuddannelse 3. You can also sit the Danish tests as a self-funded candidate. The Studieprøven is aimed at people with a medium or long school and education background from their home country who, for example, want to study in Danish at a higher-education institution.
Levels or stages
| Test | CEFR level (written / oral) | How it is passed |
|---|---|---|
| PD1 | A1 / A2+ | Pass or fail |
| PD2 | B1 / B1+ | Average grade of at least 2.0 over reading, writing and oral communication; oral counts double |
| PD3 | B2 / B2 | Same rule as PD2. The UCplus language centre notes that PD3 can be used, among other things, when applying for Danish citizenship |
| Studieprøven | C1 / C1 | At least 02 in each of the three parts. The written and oral parts need not be passed in the same test period |
Exam pattern
| Test | Reading | Writing | Oral |
|---|---|---|---|
| PD1 | 1 hour 15 minutes; short answers, multiple choice, matching ads, filling in words, text messages, a form | 45 minutes; about 40 words on a chosen topic, plus two short notices and an address form | 15 minutes, alone, on a portfolio of 1 topic and 3 products you made |
| PD2 | 1 hour 30 minutes in two parts (30 and 60 minutes) | 1 hour 30 minutes; one task from a choice of two, plus a personal e-mail of at least 100 words | Two parts: a topic you prepared, then a picture-based situation with another candidate |
| PD3 | 25 minutes for part 1 (15 factual questions) plus 65 minutes for parts 2A, 2B and 3 | 2 hours 30 minutes; an e-mail reply plus a task on a social topic of at least 200 words | Two parts of about 5 minutes each: a prepared topic, then a drawn topic |
| Studieprøven | 25 minutes for part 1 (15 factual questions), plus 65 minutes for the remaining parts | 3 hours; one chart-based task of at least 400 words | 30 minutes including grading: a 5-minute presentation and about 15 minutes of conversation |
No aids are allowed in the reading tests. In the writing tests, dictionaries are allowed at PD1 and, at the other three levels, as long as they are not phrase-books containing ready-made translated sentences.
Important dates
The tests are held twice a year, in May/June and November/December. For the winter 2026 round, the written tests are on 9 November (Studieprøven), 10 November (PD3), 11 November (PD2) and 12 November (PD1). The oral parts run from 2 to 15 December 2026, and the language centre sets your date. Registration for that round closed on 31 August 2026. Summer 2027 dates and deadlines were still to be announced on the official page when this was reviewed.
Fees
Self-funded candidates pay a fee set by the state. For 2026 it is 1,646 DKK for PD1, PD2 or PD3. The Studieprøven costs 987 DKK for the written part and 987 DKK for the oral part. UCplus, one language centre, says its own course students take PD3 free of charge.
How to apply
Register directly with the language centre (test provider) where you want to take the test, before the deadline. At the test you must show approved photo ID such as a passport or residence card; a photocopy is not accepted.
After the exam
If you pass PD1, PD2 or PD3 the test provider issues a certificate, and for the Studieprøven you need at least 02 in all three parts to get one. If you fail you can sit the next test period and pay the fee again. If you passed only one part of the Studieprøven, you can register for the part you did not pass.
For PD1, the official page says you can complain to your language centre within 4 weeks of receiving your result, and that candidates with dyslexia, a disability or other difficulties can apply for special conditions or an exemption at least 8 weeks before the test period begins. Ask your centre whether the same applies to the other tests.
Preparation tips
Use the past papers that the official pages link for each test, along with the answer keys.
Practise answering within the time limits, since the reading parts are timed tightly.
For the oral exams, prepare your topics in advance, because PD1, PD2, PD3 and the Studieprøven all include a prepared element.
How many times a year are the Danish tests held?
Twice a year, in May/June and in November/December.
Which test do I need for Danish citizenship?
The requirements are set by the citizenship rules, not by the test pages. The UCplus language centre notes that PD3 can be used when applying for citizenship, among other purposes; check the current requirement with the authorities.
What is the pass mark for PD2 and PD3?
An average grade of at least 2.0 across reading, writing and oral communication, with oral communication counting twice.
